Davis Love III carded a bogey-free, 5-under-par 32-33=65 in the opening round of the Sony Open.
Last time we paid attention to DL3, he withdrew from Disney due to a stiff neck. It wasn't serious enough to warrant a spot-and-follow on our injury report, but the jury remained out in the off-season. He's played the Sony sparingly over the years - this is his 11th start since 1986 - but he's recorded five top-10s here, three of which were top-3s. He finished his round today with a share of the clubhouse lead.

Davis Love III withdrew following his opening round of the Children's Miracle Network Classic, citing a neck injury.
[UPDATE: On Thursday afternoon, Love posted the following on his Twitter page: "Neck locked up, slept on it wrong, tough way to finish year I was hitting it great, now 2010!!!"] He said that he woke up "with a really stiff neck" today, adding, "Hopefully it'll loosen up. If not, I may be done for the year." Indeed, his 1-over-par 35-38=73 on Disney's Palm Course is the swan song for the season finale's defending champion. We'll leave him off the injury report unless something more serious develops.

Davis Love III withdrew on Monday morning from the Frys.com Open.
Love III played last week at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and missed the cut after a disappointing aggregate score of 3-over-par.

Davis Love III posted a second round of 3-under-par 69 and has made the cut at the Shell Houston Open.
Love III needs a win this week to play in next week's Masters, but he assured that he will play for the rest of the weekend, when he put his approach on his final hole of the round 5-feet away, which he then converted for a birdie to bring him to 2-under-par for the tournament. Going into the third round, Love finds himself only 6-shots off the lead.

Davis Love III failed to automatically qualify for the Masters after falling out of the Top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Love III missed the cut this week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and fell to 51st the updated rankings. Inside the Top 50, earning tee times at Augusta National, are Alvaro Quiros (25th), Prayad Marksaeng (47th), Mathew Goggin (49th) and Louis Oosthuizen (50th). The remaining invitation will be given to the winner of the Houston Open if he is not already eligible. Love is scheduled to compete at Redstone, where he finished T-26 last year.

Davis Love III shot 7-over-par 73-74=147 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and will miss the cut.
Love hit just 18 GIR in his two loops of Bay Hill but still needed 58 putts to finish, carding nine bogeys and a double along the way. Ranked 47th in the world entering this week, he needs to remain inside the Top 50 on Monday's updated ranking to earn a return trip to the Masters. If he's bumped from the automatic berth, he'd have to win Houston next week to play in the major.
