Charles Godfrey reclaimed his starting free safety job last week.
When Godfrey was sidelined by an ankle injury, rookie Sherrod Martin stepped in and impressed. There was some talk that Martin would keep the job, but Godfrey started against the Bucs and ended up with four tackles and an interception. "I think it is a good problem to have," coach John Fox said.

Panthers FS Charles Godfrey is expected to return from his sprained ankle this week.
Rookie Sherrod Martin has played well as his replacement, and coach John Fox indicated that he will mix in both safeties along with SS Chris Harris depending on "situations and matchups."

Beat writer Darin Gantt believes rookie Sherrod Martin will keep the starting free safety job when Charles Godfrey returns from an ankle injury.
Gantt calls Martin a rangy safety who is not afraid to lower his shoulder, and he has improved the team's pass defense. Godfrey is expected to be a bigger factor on special teams when he returns.

Panthers coach John Fox wouldn't say whether Charles Godfrey would get his starting free safety job back when he returns from an ankle injury.
Rookie Sherrod Martin stepped in for Godfrey last week and picked off two passes in his first NFL start. Martin, a second-round pick this season, was drafted to be a corner but was forced into action due to Godfrey's injury. Fox said Godfrey is "day-to-day" and he'll make a decision on the starter as we go.

Rookie DB Sherrod Martin left Saturday's game against the Ravens with a hyperextended knee.
Martin was injured on a punt in the second quarter. He is expected to be a key part to Carolina's special teams and the rookie has been working at safety and corner on defense. Martin's Week 1 status is uncertain.

Panthers S C.J. Wilson is battling second-rounder Sherrod Martin for nickel duties.
Martin was drafted specifically to play the nickel, but he's behind Wilson early in camp. Coach John Fox says the nickel package may depend on matchups during the season.
