Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com hears from a National League who thinks left-hander Aroldis Chapman should start the season in high-A or Double-A.
"He's not even close to ready," said the scout. This isn't a huge shock, of course, since it's probably best to put him in a place where he'll have a better chance to succeed while he adjusts to all the cultural differences around him. Chapman's contract with the Reds changes significantly if he is able to get to the majors by mid-May, but by all accounts, this will be hard to accomplish.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports that Aroldis Chapman's new contract with the Reds could become a three-year, $25.5 million deal should he arrive in the majors by mid-May.
What would follow is three additional years of arbitration, a scenario that would prove pretty costly for Cincinnati. Though he said otherwise yesterday, given the terms of the agreement, general manager Walt Jocketty would probably be pretty satisfied to keep him in the minor leagues for most of the season.

Reds signed LHP Aroldis Chapman to a six-year contract.
Terms were not released, however he is expected to make around $30 million. It was long assumed that the Cuban defector would sign with a big market team, but while the Yankees and Red Sox have focused on acquiring proven talent this winter, the small market Reds will bank on potential. Chapman, who turns 22 in February, is still very raw, which is why he's no lock to pitch in the majors this season, however he possesses one of the game's best fastballs -- clocked at over 100 mph -- and a plus-slider, to boot. The lanky lefty will reportedly make around $1 million in 2010, so it could be a hefty total should he not match expectations later on, but this is ultimately a small price to pay with a player of Chapman's considerable potential.

John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Reds will pay left-hander Aroldis Chapman around $1 million in 2010.
Pretty sensible. According to Fay, the Reds have signed Chapman to a five-year, $25 million contract with a player option for a sixth year, which would presumably take it over the $30 million mark mentioned in various outlets. It is a major league deal spread out over ten years. As Fay points out, it probably won't be a major burden on the Reds' payroll until 2014. Of course, by then the Reds are hoping they will have some combination of Chapman, Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto, Homer Bailey and Mike Leake in their rotation. A press conference is scheduled for 12 ET on Monday to announce the signing.

Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports that Aroldis Chapman's contract with the Reds is worth $25 million over five years with a sixth year option.
The exact financial details should be revealed once Chapman passes his physical. A five-year, $25 million deal makes a little more sense for the budget-conscious Reds than the five-year, $30 million bid that was reported earlier. An official announcement is expected on Monday.

According to Jeff Blair of Toronto's Globe and Mail, Aroldis Chapman has agreed to a five-year, $30 million contract with the Reds.
The Cuban left-hander drew bids this winter from baseball's biggest spenders and several surprise teams, but the Reds stepped forward and grabbed him with an overwhelming offer. Perhaps Cincinnati management has finally come to the realization that they must establish a quality pitching staff in order to win ball games in the cozy confines of Great American Ballpark. Chapman, 22, could be part of the answer eventually though expectations should be tempered in his first year. His fastball has been clocked in the triple-digits but he has zero major league experience.
