Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell isn't committing to a specific defensive scheme until after he evaluates his players.
Fewell is steeped in the Tampa-2 scheme, which would be a significant change for the Giants' personnel. He did hint that DE Osi Umenyiora should be a full-time part of the defensive line rotation next season, but he was noncommittal about MLB Antonio Pierce's future.

Beat writer Ralph Vacchiano doesn't expect MLB Antonio Pierce (neck) back with the Giants in 2010.
"Even if he does it’ll only be for one more season," says Vacchiano. Pierce, 31, is due $4.75 million in the final year of his contract. Jonathan Goff isn't ready to take over, so the Giants would have to address the position in free agency or the draft if they axe Pierce.

Giants GM Jerry Reese stopped short of saying MLB Antonio Pierce will be back next season.
Pierce is dealing with a bulging disk in his neck that caused him to miss the final six games of the season. It's unclear when he'll be able to return to the field and he's owed $4.75 million in 2010. It's possible the Giants will move on and go young at middle linebacker with Jonathan Goff and Chase Blackburn.

Giants MLB Antonio Pierce (neck, injured reserve) says he fully intends to continue his playing career.
Pierce, 31, "doesn't see why" he wouldn't be back with the Giants despite declining play, a potentially career-threatening injury, and a $4.75 million salary coming due in 2010. "With everything I gave New York the past five years, I feel I'll be here," he said. 2010 is the last year of Pierce's deal. The Giants did not approach him about an extension before the injury.

Giants placed MLB Antonio Pierce on injured reserve with a bulging disc in his neck, ending his season.
A neck specialist informed Pierce last week that he wouldn't need surgery, but the Giants apparently couldn't hold his roster spot any longer. Chase Blackburn will finish the year starting in the middle. Beat reporter Mike Garafolo suggests that Pierce's Giants career may be over. The 31-year-old has declined over the past two seasons, and is due $4.75 million in 2010.

Antonio Pierce sought a second opinion on the bulging disc in his neck and he does not need surgery, as expected.
Dr. Watkins agreed with the Giants' docs. Pierce will rehab on his own and try to get the disc to shrink. The Giants starting middle linebacker is still out indefinitely and it would be a surprise if he plays again during the regular season.
