The Australian Associated Press is reporting that Stuart Appleby will play in next week's Australian Masters instead of the season-ending Children's Miracle Network Classic on the PGA Tour.
Less than two weeks ago, Appleby, who is now 134th on the money list, told Golf Channel that the Frys.com Open was to be his final start in the U.S., but then he popped up in the field for the Viking Classic. Although he still has until 5:00 p.m. ET this Friday to commit to the Disney stop, he is willing to accept conditional status for 2010, which along with his career resume should draw in the neighborhood of 25 starts anyway. "My last talk with him, [he said] he was coming home this week," said his manager, Wayne Smith. "As far as I know that hasn't changed. He's told me he's definitely playing the Masters." Appleby could still use a career earnings exemption, but that is unlikely given that he's only 38 and not dropping all the way down into Past Champion status.

Stuart Appleby was a late addition to the field of the Viking Classic.
Appleby had talked last week about shutting it down for the rest of the PGA Tour's season after the Frys.com, but he currently is in 134th place on the Tour's Money List and has to make it to the Top 125 to retain his status for the 2010 season.

Stuart Appleby told "Golf Central" that regardless of his result at this week's Frys.com Open, it will be his final PGA Tour start of 2009.
Appleby enters the event ranked 132nd in earnings and does not have fully exempt status on tour for 2010, so it's an interesting decision to say the least. He should have no problem getting to 25 starts even if he's on conditional status, but he's prepared to start writing letters (for sponsor exemptions). Appleby is currently 133rd in the world ranking and not yet eligible for any of the 2010 majors. He's played in every major since the 1997 Masters.

Stuart Appleby withdrew on Wednesday morning from the RBC Canadian Open.
His withdrawal is a bit of a surprise, because Appleby isn't a player that withdraws from tournaments after he has committed. He was mired in a slump during the late spring and early summer, but recently his game had been coming back, with a T-16 at the AT&T National and a T-65 at the British Open.
