Phil Mickelson followed his opening 72 with a 5-under-par 34-32=66 in the second round of the Northern Trust Open.
He continues to recover from disappointing rounds at this storied track. Today he hit one more GIR (12) and required six fewer putts (26) than on Thursday. The inclement weather has forced higher scores in the second round. Despite sitting six strokes off the 36-hole clubhouse lead, Mickelson had already cracked the top-10 at the completion of today's round.

Phil Mickelson shot a 1-over-par 34-38=72 in the opening round of the Northern Trust Open.
Lefty hit 11 GIR and still required 32 putts to tour Riviera today. He played his final seven holes in 7-over. The two-time defending champ carded rounds of 72 in the second and fourth rounds a year ago so he's never out of it at this venue.

In his press conference today at the Northern Trust Open, Phil Mickelson announced that he will not play the Ping Eye2 wedge at this week's event.
Mickelson started his presser strongly stating two points. First, he accepted Scott McCarron's sincere apology on Tuesday. Second, because of his respect for the other players on tour, and citing the support they gave last year (during the "Pink Out" at the Colonial), he will not play the loophole wedge for now. He will give the governing bodies time to iron out the matter and solve the problem. He said that "it's killing" golf. He added that the rule change (rollback to V-grooves) has been good for him, but that it doesn't make it right for the game.

On Tuesday evening, Scott McCarron issued an apology to Phil Mickelson over his accusation that Mickelson had cheated by using a grandfathered legal square-grooved Ping Eye2 wedge at the Farmers Insurance Open.
The comments came after a scheduled Tuesday evening players meeting with commissioner Tim Finchem. The use of the word "cheating" by McCarron in his original comments at the Farmers Insurance Open started a firestorm of controversy about the new V-shaped grove rule and about the 20-year-old square-grooved Ping Eye2 wedges exemption from the new rule due to a legal agreement reached between the U.S.G.A. and Ping. McCarron tried late last week to soften his original statement, but it was pretty apparent that nothing less than a full apology would do.

Phil Mickelson carded a third round of 2-under-par 70 and is four-strokes off the lead at the Farmers Insurance Open.
It was a real roller coaster round for Lefty as he birdied the par-5 6th hole, but then double-bogeyed the next hole after his tee shot was caught in the branches of a eucalyptus tree. He birdied the 9th hole to end the front nine in even-par and on the back nine he bogeyed the par-4 12th, but then rebounded with an eagle at the par-5 13th after reaching the green in two from 614-yards. The final hole saw Mickelson find the water with his approach, but he was able to get up and down after his drop to save par. On Sunday, Mickelson will be looking for his 38th career championship on the PGA Tour and his first since last year's TOUR Championship.

Phil Mickelson signed for a 5-under-par 33-34=67 after his second round of the Farmers Insurance Open on the North Course at Torrey Pines.
And this despite hitting just two (of 14) fairways, and one of the two was on the 2nd hole where he drove the green. Like he always does, Mickelson made his hay around the greens, but long-distance putts on his final two holes (8th and 9th), one for par and one for birdie, provided the signature moments of the day. He's four strokes back of the 36-hole lead.
