The R&A has revised its qualifying criteria for the British Open to allow all past champions a five-year exemption after finishing inside the top-10 at the event.
This directly influences the eligibility of 2009 British Open runner-up, Tom Watson, who turned 60 in September and was facing his final start in the major at St. Andrews in 2010 because of the age restriction. "We have introduced this exemption as a direct response to seeing two of our great Open Champions, both in their fifties, challenging to win our championship these last two years," explained Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A, also inferring Greg Norman's T-3 in 2008 at the age of 53.

Tom Watson posted a final round of 2-over-par 72 and finished in second place after a four-hole playoff with Stewart Cink.
Watson birdied the 17th hole to take a one-stroke lead going into the 72nd hole of the Open. His tee shot found the fairway, but his approach shot was too strong and he went over the green. After a round of thunderous applause from the 18th hole crowd, he decided to putt the ball to the green, however he was too strong again and put the ball 10-feet past the cup. The 10-foot putt to win the Open title came up short and created a four-hole playoff with Stewart Cink. Watson was a stroke down going into the third playoff hole at the par-5 17th, however an errant tee shot caused a double-bogey that sealed his second place finish.

Tom Watson carded a third round of 1-over-par 71 and leads by a stroke at the British Open.
Watson was steady on his opening nine, but a three-putt bogey at the ninth hole cut his lead down to a single stroke. On the back nine, he dropped into a three-way tie after a bogey at the 12th hole and fell a stroke behind Mathew Goggin at the 15th hole, after his tee shot at the par-3 found the back bunker. Watson then responded by dropping a 20-foot birdie bomb on the next hole and took back the sole lead with a kick-in birdie at the par-5 17th. On Sunday, the 59-year-old Watson will attempt to win his sixth British Open title, which would tie him with Harry Vardon for the most Open championships, and to become the oldest player ever to win a British Open, breaking the record held by Old Tom Morris.

Tom Watson responded to his opening 65 with an even-par 70 in the second round of the British Open, grabbing a share of the clubhouse lead.
The five-time Open champion birdied the 1st hole, then went south with five bogeys over his next six. He turned it around with four birdies (against no bogeys or worse) over his final 10, including long-rangers at the 16th and 18th. What's more is that today's mid-round improvement coincided with the foul weather and wind that rolled through. What else would you expect from Watson in those conditions?

Tom Watson crafted a bogey-free, 5-under-par 33-32=65 in his opening round of the British Open.
The 59-year-old hit 12 (of 14) fairways, 15 GIR and took 28 putts, turning back the clock to 1977 when he concluded his title at Turnberry with consecutive 65s. The weather is ideal today, but Watson could play in anything, which only enhances his chances at golf's oldest major championship. Obviously, this is an incredible developing story.
