 Chris Shelton-1B - Astros Apr. 1 - 2:00 pm et

Mariners reassigned 1B Chris Shelton and RHP Randy Messenger to minor league camp; optioned LHP Garrett Olson to Triple-A Tacoma.
No, spring training numbers don't mean a whole lot. Shelton, though, hit .460/.534/.720 in 50 at-bats and pretty clearly earned a spot. Instead, the Mariners are going to go with Mike Sweeney, who is a one-year option at best. It'd seem to be good news for Russell Branyan, as Sweeney probably won't be asked to play first base more than once a week. Shelton is the far more legitimate option there.
 Tyler Walker-R - Nationals Mar. 28 - 11:48 am et

Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu won't appoint a closer until next Friday or Saturday, when the team travels to Las Vegas for an exhibition game against the Rockies.
For celebration purposes, we can only assume. Tyler Walker, Mark Lowe, Randy Messenger, Roy Corcoran and Miguel Batista are in the running, and there really isn't a clear favorite. Wakamatsu might be better off using a committee until Chad Cordero is healthy, but that won't satisfy fantasy owners. We'll keep you posted.
