Mike Hampton will undergo left shoulder surgery on Tuesday.
Dr. David Altchek will perform the procedure at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Hampton, 37, decided to shut himself down at the end of August so that he could undergo operations on both knees and his shoulder. It's his best shot at coming back close to full-strength. Hampton was 7-10 with a 5.30 ERA in 21 starts with the Astros this season.

Astros transferred LHP Mike Hampton from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The transaction opens a spot on the 40-man roster. Hampton decided late last month to undergo season-ending operations on his left shoulder and both knees. He was 7-10 with a 5.30 ERA over 21 starts this season.

Mike Hampton has opted to undergo season-ending operations on his left shoulder and both knees.
Hampton, 37, hopes to return to baseball at some point down the road. "I’m going to have this surgery with every intent of continuing to play," he said. "During the off-season I’ll pick up a ball and start throwing. I’ll rehab and see if it’s going to be doable to be capable of playing." Hampton was 7-10 with a 5.30 ERA over 21 starts this season.

According to MLB.com's Alyson Footer, left-hander Mike Hampton (shoulder) will not be returning this season.
Hampton tried to play catch Friday, but couldn't get through the session without feeling shoulder discomfort. The Astros have sent MRIs of his knee and shoulder to a specialist, and will wait for word on whether surgery is necessary.

Mike Hampton played catch Thursday for the first time since undergoing platelet replacement therapy for his torn rotator cuff.
Hampton wasn't impressed with the results. "I threw probably about 50 throws. I'm trying to get it going. Some felt good, some didn't. ... I don't care who you are, if you haven't thrown in two weeks you're not going to feel great." He'll try throwing again in a couple of days, but probably shouldn't be counted on to make another start this season.
