Jeff Clement isn't a sure thing to open 2010 as the Pirates' first baseman.
"From our brief look at Jeff in August, we need to give him a foundation and get him acclimated over there," director of player development Kyle Stark said. Clement was scheduled to get some work in at first base during the Instructional League in October, but was limited to off-field rehabilitation because of a strained oblique. It will likely be a trial by fire during spring training. Garrett Jones and Steve Pearce are also possibilities for first base should the club decide he needs more seasoning in the minors.

General manager Neal Huntington said Garrett Jones will play right field if Jeff Clement proves he can handle first base.
The original plan was for Clement to get a shot at first base in September so they could get a better roadmap for the position entering 2010, however an oblique injury put the kibosh on that. The Pirates have three options at the position in Jones, Clement and Steve Pearce, so we'll have to see how things shake out during spring training.

The Pirates are now unlikely to call up 1B Jeff Clement.
Clement suffered an oblique injury Aug. 27, and the Bucs don't want to push him to the majors so soon after the injury. The team is expected to send him to the instructional league for extra work once he heals. Robinzon Diaz and Brian Bixler are expected to be recalled Tuesday, once the Triple-A season is over.

According to Dejan Kovacevic of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates are only planning on a few September callups.
The newly-acquired Jeff Clement is a near-lock to see time at first base in September. Others with a strong chance of a callup include pitchers Daniel McCutchen, Eric Hacker and Chris Bootcheck. General manager Neil Huntington says that it is "undetermined" if Jose Tabata, who was promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis last week, will make his major league debut this season.

New Pirate Jeff Clement went 3-for-4 with two home runs in his Indianapolis debut.
Clement will learn first base in the hopes of becoming the Pirates' starting first baseman in 2010. For now, Steven Pearce will draw the bulk of the starts at first at the major league level, but Clement is certain to come up in September and receive liberal playing time.

Pirates acquired C Jeff Clement and four others from the Mariners for RHP Ian Snell and SS Jack Wilson.
Clement learned he was going to be traded Tuesday night, hours before anything broke to the media. There have been questions about his defense, but the 25-year-old was batting .288/.366/.505 with 14 home runs and 68 RBI at Triple-A Tacoma and could crack the majors with the Pirates fairly soon.
