 Kelly Shoppach-C- RaysJan. 5 - 11:31 am et
ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Rays have avoided arbitration with catcher Kelly Shoppach by inking him to a two-year, $5.5 million deal.
The Rays snagged Shoppach from the Indians in early December for a player to be named later. The 29-year-old struggled to a .214/.335/.399 batting in 2009 but hit 21 home runs with an .865 OPS the year before. He should see a good amount of time behind the plate for Tampa Bay next season and is a fine pick in AL-only leagues.

 Kelly Shoppach-C - Rays Dec. 15 - 2:15 pm et

Joseph Castrovince of MLB.com reports that the Indians will acquire either RHP Mitch Talbot or RHP Joseph Cruz from the Rays to complete the Kelly Shoppach trade.
Talbot, 26, was limited to just 15 starts in '09 due to shoulder and elbow injuries, but posted a 3.69 ERA and 67/18 K/BB ratio in 68 1/3 innings. Talbot had an 11.17 ERA in three appearances with the Rays in 2008. Cruz, 21, has a 3.52 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 9.7 K/9 in 37 games (34 starts) over three seasons in the Tampa Bay organization. He has yet to pitch above Class A.
 Dioner Navarro-C - Rays Dec. 12 - 10:59 pm et

Rays agreed to terms with catcher Dioner Navarro on a one-year, $2.1 million contract.
Here's quite a surprise. Navarro opted to settle for the exact same salary he received last season in order to avoid being non-tendered. Even though it was an extremely disappointing 2009 campaign, he might have been able to do better elsewhere and face less competition for playing time. The Rays are going to be paying Kelly Shoppach more than Navarro, so he might have the early edge when it comes to at-bats. Of course, it's still possible that the Rays could go ahead and trade Navarro to a team that would like him as a starter.
 Dioner Navarro-C - Rays Dec. 7 - 9:41 pm et

Tracy Ringolsby of FOXSports.com has confirmed that the Rays are shopping catcher Dioner Navarro at this week's Winter Meetings.
The Rays will either get rid of Navarro via trade, according to Ringolsby, or they will non-tender him later this week. Tampa management is apparently satisfied with using Kelly Shoppach as the club's 2010 starting catcher. Navarro, 25, should find a home somewhere. He hit a lousy .218/.261/.322 this past season but is only a year removed from a .295/.349/.407 batting line.

 Dioner Navarro-C - Rays Dec. 4 - 5:45 pm et

Rays manager Joe Maddon suggested Friday that Dioner Navarro and new catcher Kelly Shoppach may split time behind the plate in 2010.
"I think it can be kind of a really great combination, actually," said Maddon. "Those are two pretty good catchers right there." Rumors have been floated this offseason indicating that the Rays may non-tender Navarro or try trade him, but perhaps a platoon could work. Navarro is a switch-hitter and could start against right-handers, while Shoppach, a right-handed hitter, could play against lefties. Shoppach hit .304/.420/.625 against southpaws in 2009.

 Kelly Shoppach-C - Rays Dec. 1 - 3:04 pm et

Rays acquired catcher Kelly Shoppach from the Indians for a player to be named later.
The Indians must choose a player on or before December 20. Shoppach, 29, hit 21 home runs with an .865 OPS in 2008, but struggled to a .214/.335/.399 slash-line in 2009. He's hit righties to a .224/.308/.396 line in his career, so while the upside is high, he still has a lot to prove before he is an everyday backstop. The Indians did well to pick up at least something for Shoppach, who was likely to be non-tendered by the Indians next month. Look for the Rays to attempt to trade Dioner Navarro before possibly non-tendering him next month.
