The Mets are close to an agreement with free agent first baseman Mike Jacobs on a minor league contract, reports ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.
He would get an invite to spring training as a non-roster invitee. Jacobs hit just .228/.297/.401 and struck out 132 times in 434 at-bats last year for the Royals, but he has a career .830 OPS against righties and boasts a decent amount of power. As far as no-risk fliers go, this is a decent one -- it wouldn't be shocking to see Jacobs enter into a platoon in New York.

 Josh Willingham-OF - Nationals Jan. 22 - 5:36 pm et

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the Nationals have "once again put Josh Willingham back out on the market."
Olney suggests that a trade could clear the way for Adam Dunn to move back to the outfield. The Nats expressed interest in Mike Jacobs recently and might want to bring him in to play first base. Willingham, 30, hit .260 with an .863 OPS, 24 home runs and 61 RBI in 133 games last season.

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo told the MLB Network Wednesday that he has interest in free agent first baseman Mike Jacobs.
As MLB.com's Bill Ladson notes on Twitter, it's a mystery as to how Jacobs might fit in with the Nationals. The club is already committed to Adam Dunn at first base and Mike Morse is his current backup. "When reached by phone," writes Ladson, "Mike Jacobs sounded like a person who wanted to play every day." Let's hope the Nats aren't considering moving Dunn back to the outfield.

The Giants have "minimal" interest in free agent first baseman Mike Jacobs, according to Chris Haft of MLB.com.
The Giants are hoping to add a little more offense to their roster and Jacobs is a decent fit if used primarily against right-handers. Jacobs hit just .228/.297/.401 and struck out 132 times in 434 at-bats last year, but he has a .830 OPS against righties and boasts a decent amount of power.

 Mike Jacobs-DH - Royals Dec. 10 - 8:57 am et

Royals released 1B Mike Jacobs.
Dayton Moore sent him walking right before the Rule 5 Draft to make some additional room on the 40-man roster. Jacobs, 29, struggled in his first season in the American League, batting just .228/.297/.401 with 19 home runs and 61 RBI. He has an .830 career OPS against right-handed pitching, so it appears a platoon is in his future. He was a prime candidate to be non-tendered in December, anyway, so it made plenty of sense to cut him loose right now.

Joe Frisaro of MLB.com suggests that Mike Jacobs could be back in the National League next year.
Frisaro covered Jacobs during his time with the Marlins, so it's unclear whether this is just a fleeting thought or if there is a trade in the works with a National League team. Jacobs struggled in his first season with the Royals in 2009, batting .228/.297/.401 with 19 home runs and 61 RBI, making him a prime candidate to be non-tendered in December.
