Royals released 1B Mike Jacobs.
Dayton Moore sent him walking right before the Rule 5 Draft to make some additional room on the 40-man roster. Jacobs, 29, struggled in his first season in the American League, batting just .228/.297/.401 with 19 home runs and 61 RBI. He has an .830 career OPS against right-handed pitching, so it appears a platoon is in his future. He was a prime candidate to be non-tendered in December, anyway, so it made plenty of sense to cut him loose right now.
