A Mets source close to Omar Minaya told Jon Heyman of SI.com that the reason Minaya still has his job is strictly because of the three-year extension the GM signed in October 2008.
Minaya is certainly on very thin ice, and Heyman believes manager Jerry Manuel is in a better position to last longer in the organization. The Mets are willing to spend in free agency, so Minaya will have the chance to build a contending team. If New York falls flat on their face again, you can bet Omar will be on the way out.

Johan Santana had successful arthroscopic elbow surgery Tuesday morning at New York's Hospital for Special Surgery.
Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek preformed the surgery and was able to safely remove multiple bone fragments from Santana's left elbow. The left-hander finished the year with a 13-9 record and 3.13 ERA in 25 starts, and is expected to make a full recovery by the start of spring training 2010.

Mets placed LHP Johan Santana on the 15-day disabled list with bone spurs in his left elbow.
The latest blow for the Metropolitans, Santana will miss the rest of the season with arthroscopic surgery. The southpaw started the season strong, but was merely pedestrian over his last 15 starts, putting up a 4.02 ERA. The Mets seemed to have dodged a bullet, as their $137.5 million ace should be ready for the start of the 2010 season. He finishes the year with a 13-9 record and 3.13 ERA in 25 starts.

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Johan Santana will need season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow, but should be ready for the start of the 2010 season.
And the Mets' fanbase breathes a collective sigh of relief. A examination by Dr. David Altchek revealed that Santana has bone chips his elbow that need some cleaning. It certainly could have been worse, but the Mets have nothing to play for, so perhaps this is a blessing in disguise. He finishes the season at 13-9 with a 3.13 ERA. Santana has four years remaining on a six-year, $137.5 million contract with the Mets.

Sources have informed ESPN.com's Buster Olney that Johan Santana will not require surgery on his injured left elbow.
A couple of Santana's teammates suggested Monday that the left-hander's elbow injury was serious and that surgery might be required. Olney's sources have debunked those claims. Of course, we won't truly know all the answers until Tuesday's MRI results are reviewed by club physicians.

A couple of Mets teammates revealed Monday evening that Johan Santana's elbow is in bad shape, and may require surgery.
"I don't think anyone expects good news," said fellow starter Mike Pelfrey. New outfielder Jeff Francoeur concurred with that sentiment, adding that he thinks surgery is in the cards. Santana has already been scratched from his next scheduled start and it sure doesn't sound like he'll be returning this year. The left-hander will be examined by a specialist Tuesday before any decisions are made.
