Joe Nathan (elbow) played catch Monday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery in March.
Nathan threw two sets of 10 tosses with Twins trainer Chris Johnson, who was standing approximately 45 feet away. "Just to see that the work up to this point is working is very encouraging," said Nathan. "Just to get out here and finally play some baseball, play some catch and not feel any pain, it's very encouraging." Nathan said he hopes to be throwing from 150- to 180-feet by the end of the season. Barring any significant setbacks, he should be available at some point early next season.

Joe Nathan (elbow) is scheduled to play catch Saturday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery in March.
Great news. "Other pitchers (with the same injury) have told me they can't believe how good it feels to play catch for the first time," said Nathan, who is expected to make 20 throws from 45 feet. "It's going to feel good to put on a glove." He hopes to return at some point early next season.

Twins transferred RHP Joe Nathan to the 60-day disabled list.
Nathan underwent Tommy John surgery before the start of the regular season and is unlikely to return before spring training next year. Jon Rauch is filling in nicely so far in the Twins' closer role.

Twins placed RHP Joe Nathan on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26, with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
Nathan underwent successful Tommy John surgery in New York last Friday. He will miss the entire 2010 season. The Twins are expected to employ a "closer-by-committee" in his absence, composing of Jon Rauch, Matt Guerrier, Jose Mijares and Jesse Crain.

Joe Nathan underwent successful Tommy John surgery in New York on Friday.
Dr. David Altcheck replaced Nathan's ulnar collateral ligament with a ligament from his left wrist. He will miss the entire 2010 season, but if all goes well with his rehab, he should be back around this time next year. Jon Rauch is his most likely replacement in the interim, though the Twins are reportedly discussing other options.

Joe Nathan's Tommy John surgery will be performed on Friday in New York by David Altchek.
He will miss 2010 but should be back around this time next year, assuming all goes according to plan with his ulnar collateral ligament replacement surgery and subsequent rehab. Jon Rauch is the most likely replacements for Nathan, but no successor has yet been named. The Twins have also been linked to Jason Frasor and Heath Bell.
