The Dodgers and C Russell Martin avoided arbitration on Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $5.05 million contract.
Martin, who turns 27 next month, had a down year across the board in 2009, with career-lows in batting average, home runs and RBI, but still gets nearly a $1.2 million raise. The five homers during the second half hinted at a rebound, but he's one of the bigger question marks on the team entering 2010.

Russell Martin's grand slam broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning and propelled the Dodgers to a 7-2 win over the Cubs on Thursday.
The homer was just his fourth of the season and his second career grand slam in 55 at-bats with the bases loaded. With one swing of the bat, he drove in more runs than he had in his previous 21 games combined.

Russell Martin made his season debut at third base in Wednesday's game against the Giants.
Martin, who made eight starts and 11 appearances in total at third last year, moved to third after first baseman James Loney was removed from today's game. Brad Ausmus took over behind the plate.

Russell Martin belted a two-run homer off Marlin starter Chris Volstad on Sunday.
Martin is doing a fine job with a .307 average and .392 on-base percentage this month, but he's still showing very little power with three homers, one double, and no triples since the start of June. The Dodgers won't mind if he can put a bad four months behind him and play like his usual All-Star self in the playoffs, but they'll need to start seeing something before they can stop being concerned.

Russell Martin is in the midst of a three-day "mental break" as he continues to struggle at the plate.
Martin, a career .285 hitter, is batting just .247 on the season and .192 in the month of June. "I think he might be a little drained on the mental side, (catching) and then trying to go up there and not being the offensive player he knows he is and knows he's going to be," manager Joe Torre said. He'll return to the lineup Friday.
