Kelly Shoppach was 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBI in a win over the White Sox on Friday night.
Think Shoppach is starting to feel the heat? Red Sox acquired catcher-first baseman Victor Martinez from the Indians for RHP Justin Masterson, LHP Nick Hagadone and RHP Bryan Price.
The Red Sox didn’t give up three very good young arms to turn Martinez into a part-timer. Ideally, he’ll catch a couple of times per week, DH against some lefties and play first base the rest of the time. After a brilliant start, he was down to .284/.368/.464 for the season. The Red Sox will hope the trade reenergizes him. For what it’s worth, he’s a career .313/.361/.552 hitter at Fenway. Mike Lowell stands to lose playing time. The Indians figure to call up either Matt LaPorta or Lou Marson to take the empty roster spot. How much playing time Kelly Shoppach picks up will depend on whether they want to give Marson a look.

Kelly Shoppach hit his first career grand slam off Clayton Richard and walked twice in the Indians' 10-8 defeat of the White Sox on Thursday.
Shoppach had been 5-for-26 with 10 strikeouts and no extra-base hits with the bases loaded in his career before taking Richard deep in the second inning. The shot gave him seven homers and 23 RBI in 151 at-bats for the year. He's still hitting just .199, but those power numbers would make him a quality fantasy catcher if if played regularly.

Kelly Shoppach homered and doubled off Chris Carpenter during Sunday's victory.
Shoppach's production has decreased as his playing time has increased, but he's considerably better than the .200 he was hitting going into tonight. The Indians will have him do more catching, with Victor Martinez starting at first base, if he can get hot.

Victor Martinez is questionable to play Monday after sitting out Sunday's game with his bruised left knee.
Kelly Shoppach and Ryan Garko both played Sunday and would likely do so again tomorrow if Martinez can't go.

Victor Martinez left Saturday's game after one inning because of a left knee injury.
Martinez was down for a few minutes after fouling a pitch off the knee in the first. He got up and finished his at-bat, but he couldn't run at all on his groundout and Kelly Shoppach replaced him to begin the second.
