Pirates general manager Neal Huntington indicated Thursday that Delwyn Young will work in a utility role next season.
Young picked up a good amount of starts at second base in '09 after Freddy Sanchez was dealt to the Giants. But the Bucs picked up Akinori Iwamura last week, pushing Young back into a utility role heading into next season. "We do still think he can be more than just a role player," Huntington said after the deal. "But for us, right now, he is a role player - and a very good one."

Delwyn Young is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday.
Young has been slowed by back trouble lately, but says that his back isn't currently an issue. Regardless, his absence from the lineup probably has something to do with the fact that he's gone 7-for-70 in his last 21 games. Luis Cruz got the start at second.

Delwyn Young, who has been battling back tightness since Monday, appeared as a pinch-hitter on Sunday.
He grounded out to the pitcher in his lone plate appearance and did not enter to play the field. Young may still be out of the starting lineup for a day or two more, but he should be back starting at some point this week. Those in NL-only leagues will probably want to stick with him.

Young suffered the injury running out a groundball during a pinch-hit appearance on Sunday. He is hitless in his last 24 at-bats and is now questionable for the remainder of the Dodgers series.
