Mariners signed OF Franklin Gutierrez to a four-year, $20.5 million contract extension with a club option for 2014.
The deal essentially covers Gutierrez's arbitration years and includes a team-friendly option for his first year of free agency. The 26-year-old posted a .283/.339/.425 batting line last season while collecting 18 home runs and 70 RBI in 153 games. He also played stellar defense in center field. Venezuelan reporter Francisco Blavia first reported news of the extension.

Ken Rosenthal confirmed an earlier report that the Mariners will sign outfielder Franklin Gutierrez to a 4-year, $20.5 million extension.
The news was first reported by Venezuelan reporter Francisco Blavia and reportedly has a fifth-year team option. Gutierrez batted .283/.339/.425 in 2009 with 18 home runs and 70 RBI in 153 games while playing stellar defense in center field.

The Mariners are closing in on a long-term contract for outfielder Franklin Gutierrez, according to Venezuelan reporter Francisco Blavia.
A Tweet by David Cameron, citing Blavia, has the deal at 4-years and $20.5 million with a team option for a fifth year. Gutierrez is eligible for arbitration this winter for the first time in his career. The 26-year-old hit .283/.339/.425 in 2009 with 18 home runs and 70 RBI in 153 games while also playing stellar defense in center field. The deal, if true, appears to be fair to both sides.

The Mariners are "making progress" on a long-term contract for outfielder Franklin Gutierrez, according to FOXSports.com.
Gutierrez is eligible for arbitration this winter for the first time in his career. The 26-year-old hit .283/.339/.425 in 2009 with 18 home runs and 70 RBI in 153 games while also playing stellar defense in center field. The extension would likely cover all of his arbitration years.

Adam Jones reportedly has won the Gold Glove for his work manning centerfield in Baltimore.
The official announcement isn't due for another week or so, but Jones' brother broke the news... on MySpace. Take it with a grain of salt, but if true, he would win it over the more deserving Franklin Gutierrez of Seattle. Jones' UZR fielding rating places him 12th among all centerfielders despite repeated reports of fantastic defense. Gutierrez is first, and it's not even close.

Franklin Gutierrez hit one of four Mariner solo homers on Sunday but the team still lost to the Blue Jays 5-4.
Mike Sweeney, Kenji Johjima, and Matt Tuiasosopo added the other three solo shots. Gutierrez's 18 homers, 43 walks, and .278 average have all been solid, but his overall production has been hurt by a mere 20 doubles. He's still an excellent player thanks in large part to his fantastic defense, but he still has room for improvement offensively.
