Blake Hawksworth is unlikely to draw a start in the absence of Kyle Lohse.
Hawksworth has posted a 2.45 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 11/4 K/BB ratio during two stints in the Cards' bullpen this season. "If you had to drag it out of me," manager Tony La Russa said Saturday, "my opinion is that we more need the reliever than we do the starter in that spot." Mitchell Boggs is the favorite.

Cardinals recalled RHP Blake Hawksworth from Triple-A Memphis.
Hawksworth earlier spent a month with the Cardinals, posting a 3.60 ERA in 10 innings, albeit a 1/2 K/BB ratio. He was slated to start Sunday for Memphis, but the Cardinals needed the arm. Since the demotion, Hawksworth has chalked up a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings, striking out six and walking one. Given the spent bullpen, he has an opportunity to pitch Sunday.

Hawksworth will provide a fresh arm in the pen after Jess Todd's 45-pitch effort on Friday night. He figures to see work as a long-man. As a starter, he was 5-4 with a 3.92 ERA for Memphis. The 26-year-old becomes the 13th rookie to play for the Cardinals this season.
