Patterson hit just .167/.161/.200 in 30 at-bats over a two-week stretch with the A's in July and early August. He'll provide depth for the struggling club, but carries no fantasy value.

Athletics optioned outfielder Eric Patterson to Triple-A Sacramento.
Patterson took Matt Holliday's spot on the roster in late July, and hit just .167/.161/.200 in 30 at-bats over a two-week stretch. The 26-year-old was doing well at the Triple-A level, but will hand second base duties back over to Mark Ellis and Adam Kennedy.

Athletics recalled 2B Eric Patterson from Triple-A Sacramento.
He replaces the departed Matt Holliday on the roster. Patterson is crushing Triple-A pitching, with a line of .326/.392/.523. He deserves a shot at regular playing time, and it would be surprising if Oakland didn't see what it has in Patterson at second base. Despite his solid year, Adam Kennedy isn't the future there.

The A's are still trying to figure out their injury-depleted infield, but Patterson struggled in his two-game audition over the weekend by getting just one hit in eight at-bats.

Eric Chavez is likely to go on the disabled list, according to manager Bob Geren.
Chavez is suffering from right arm/elbow problems that has kept him out of the lineup since April 24. The Oakland infield has taken a hit the past few days as Nomar Garciaparra and Matt Ellis went on the 15-day disabled list with calf injuries. Triple-A candidates for recall are Cliff Pennington and Gregorio Petit. On Thursday the infield had Landon Powell at first, Bobby Crosby at third, Eric Patterson making his season debut at second and Orlando Cabrera at short. Jason Giambi will see more time at first than DH and Jack Hannahan will see some time at third. It may be a while before Geren finds a suitable combination of the above players and whomever is recalled from the minors.

Patterson, who was hitting .329 with two homers and nine steals at Triple-A, figures to get a look at second base with Mark Ellis on the DL. He's worth a flier in AL-only leagues.
