| Paul Maholm's 2009 Profile | | Maholm, the eighth overall pick in the 2003 draft, established himself as a solid starter in his third major league season. Still, it wasn’t quite as much of a step forward as it appeared to be, as he had a 4.32 ERA over the first five months of 2007 before a back problem wrecked his September. Maholm works at 89-92 mph, and his curveball has started to result in more strikeouts. As long as he keeps his walk rate where it’s been the last two seasons, he should remain a legitimate middle-of-the-rotation guy going forward. Unfortunately, since he’s a Pirate, he’ll be pitching on Opening Day. Because wins figure to remain a problem, he’s just a $2-$3 pitcher in NL-only leagues.Updated Jul. 7: Paul Maholm allowed two runs over six innings in a 6-3 win over the Astros on Tuesday. There's been some concern about a groin injury with Maholm recently, but he eased those fears with a solid outing, holding the Astros to just six hits. He walked two and struck out two, while getting 11 outs on the ground. A positive sign.
