 Ross Ohlendorf-S- PiratesSep. 20 - 1:57 pm et
The Pirates have shut down Ross Ohlendorf for the final two weeks of the season.
If they need a spot starter to replace him, Jeff Karstens could be the choice. Ohlendorf finishes a surprisingly strong campaign 11-10 with a 3.92 ERA. His peripherals, though, don't really back up those numbers. He gave up 25 homers and struck out 109 in 176 2/3 innings, suggesting that he was quite fortunate to give up just 165 hits. He'll probably allow at least a hit an inning next year, so it's a must that he cut back on the homers surrendered.

 Ross Ohlendorf-S - Pirates Sep. 19 - 3:19 pm et

Ross Ohlendorf yielded one run over seven innings against the Padres on Saturday afternoon, but suffered a no-decision in an eventual 2-1 loss.
Ohlendorf was excellent against the light-hitting Padres, allowing just five hits while walking one and striking out five. The only run scored on a third-inning double by Everth Cabrera. Though it has been speculated before, this was likely his last start of the season. The 27-year-old has a career-high 176 2/3 innings under his belt. He is 11-10 with a 3.92 ERA over 29 starts this season.

The Pirates have shut Ross Ohlendorf down for the rest of the season.
Ohlendorf entered his 6 1/3-inning Saturday start with 163 1/3 frames under his belt, over 30 innings more than his previous career high. "It's gonna be tough," manager John Russell said after the game. "He's fun to watch. You talk to him, and he'll tell you there's a lot he wants to accomplish." He'll finish the 2009 season with an 11-10 record, 4.03 ERA and 1.25 WHIP.

The Pirates are expected to shut down 27-year-old right-hander Ross Ohlendorf after just two or three more starts.
Ohlendorf has been excellent for the Pirates as of late, but his inning count stands at 163 1/3, well above the 131 2/3 frames he pitched last year. "We'll look at how many pitches he throws and a lot of factors," said Bucs GM Neal Huntington. "We still think he's going to get his work in, and we'll see how it unfolds."

Ross Ohlendorf became the 40th pitcher in major league history to strike out the side in nine pitches Saturday in a no-decision against the Cardinals.
Manager Tony La Russa did Ohlendorf a huge favor by sitting Albert Pujols, Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina all on the same day, and Ohlendorf responded by allowing just an unearned run and striking out a career-high 11 in eight innings. It's just too bad Ohlendorf is a Pirate, so he took a no-decision in an extra-inning loss anyway. Ohlendorf fanned Khalil Greene, Julio Lugo and Jason LaRue on nine pitches in the seventh inning. Making the feat even more memorable is that each strikeout ended with Ryan Doumit failing to come up with the ball and having to throw to first to record the out.

Ross Ohlendorf held the Phillies to two runs over 6 1/3 innings on Tuesday night, but suffered a no-decision in an eventual 6-4 win.
A tough no-decision for Ohlendorf, as Matt Capps blew the save in the top of the ninth. Ohlendorf held the Phillies to six hits -- with both runs scoring on solo homers by Jimmy Rollins -- while striking out six and walking two. Ohlendorf now sits at 149 1/3 innings, so owners can expect him to get about three more starts before being shut down for the year, as the Pirates would like to limit him to around 170 innings this season.
