 Tony Gwynn Jr.-OF- PadresSep. 7 - 6:53 pm et
Tony Gwynn Jr. went 0-for-4 in Monday's loss to the Giants.
Gwynn's Padres career got off to a very nice start, but he's getting worse by the week. By month, he's posted OPSs of 833 (in 25 AB in May), 776, 693 and 520 in August. He's 1-for-14 so far in September, and he's just 6-for-12 stealing bases for the year. There's no way the Padres will pencil him in as their 2010 center fielder unless he gets a whole lot better from here on in.

 Tony Gwynn Jr.-OF - Padres Aug. 29 - 10:23 pm et

Tony Gwynn Jr. hit a two-run triple in the eighth inning Saturday to lift his Padres over the Marlins 7-4.
It was Gwynn's fifth triple of the season and pushed his RBI total to 13. He's been receiving regular playing time recently and carries decent value in deeper NL-only leagues. The Padres managed 11 total hits on the night, including a home run from Will Venable.
 Brian Giles-OF - Dodgers Jul. 16 - 1:32 pm et

Padres GM Kevin Towers indicated Thursday that Brian Giles will be stuck behind the club's young outfielders upon his return from the disabled list.
The Padres want Chase Headley, Tony Gwynn Jr., Will Venable and Kyle Blanks getting the outfield at-bats, which leaves Giles as the odd-man out. "I don't see Giles taking playing time away from those four," Towers said. Giles has been shelved since June 19 with a right knee contusion and there is no time table for his return. He's batting just .191/.277/.271 in 225 at-bats this season. One option: Eat the remainder of his $9 million contract.

 Craig Italiano-R - Padres Jul. 5 - 10:18 pm et

Padres acquired RHP Craig Italiano, RHP Ryan Webb and a player to be named from the Athletics for outfielder Scott Hairston.
The player to be named better be someone pretty good, considering that Hairston was cheap and under control for two more years. Italiano has a nice arm, but he hasn't had a very good year and we don't think a whole lot of Webb. Italiano was 5-6 with a 5.63 ERA, 83 H and 75/40 K/BB in 76 2/3 IP for Single-A Stockton. He can reach the mid-90s with his fastball and his curve occasionally resembles a plus pitch, but he might need a move to the bullpen in order to maximize his potential. With Hairston out of the way, the Padres have freed up at-bats for Will Venable and Kyle Blanks, if that's how they want to play it. Chase Headley should also be feeling better about his role.
 Brian Giles-OF - Dodgers Jun. 23 - 10:02 pm et

Padres placed outfielder Brian Giles on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee contusion.
That's one way to solve the logjam in the outfield. The team has been unable to find a taker for Giles, who is hitting just .191/.277/.271 in 225 at-bats this season. With Scott Hairston returning and Tony Gwynn Jr. still streaking out of the leadoff spot, the team will be in no hurry to rush Giles back into the lineup.
 Tony Gwynn Jr.-OF - Padres May. 23 - 1:14 am et

Making his first start for the Padres, Tony Gwynn Jr. doubled, walked and scored two of the team's four runs on Friday.
This after he scored the winning run off the bench on Thursday. The Padres will take a spark anyway they can get it, so Gwynn could get plenty of playing time against right-handers until he shows he doesn't deserve it.
