Despite his struggles this year, Matt Capps will head into spring training next season as the Pirates' closer.
Capps has a 5.91 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and five blown saves through 56 appearances this season. "Barring some unforeseen circumstance, if Matt comes into camp in the best shape, ready to pitch, he will be our closer," Huntington said. "We absolutely believe in him. If it doesn't work out, we have other options with Joel Hanrahan, Jesse Chavez and Evan Meek."

Joel Hanrahan remains sidelined due to a sore right elbow.
The Pirates want to see how he looks throwing a side session after Wednesday's game and will presumably make a decision on his status after that. The right-hander has a 1.84 ERA (and 1.47 WHIP) with a 36/20 K/BB ratio in 29 1/3 innings since joining the Pirates.

According to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, Joel Hanrahan was unavailable for Saturday's game against the Padres due to right elbow soreness.
Hanrahan is considered day-to-day. He has a 1.84 ERA and 11.0 K/9 in 31 games since coming over from the Nationals.

Joel Hanrahan pitched hitless seventh and eighth innings to preserve a tie against the Cardinals on Sunday.
We're sure the Nationals wouldn't take it back, but the Pirates also have to be happy with how the Nyjer Morgan trade has gone. Lastings Milledge is red hot of late, and Hanrahan has a 2.05 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings for his new team. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 10 appearances.

Pirates acquired RHP Joel Hanrahan and OF Lastings Milledge from the Nationals for LHP Sean Burnett and OF Nyjer Morgan.
Hanrahan struggled out of the gate this season and eventually lost his job as the Nationals' closer. We're thinking his troubles might be related to overuse in the World Baseball Classic. He possesses a mean fastball and has always boasted a high strikeout rate. The 27-year-old should fit in nicely in Pittsburgh, and carries much more upside than Sean Burnett.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have agreed to a trade that will send OF Nyjer Morgan and LHP Sean Burnett to the Nationals for OF Lastings Milledge and RHP Joel Hanrahan.
Hanrahan struggled out of the gate this season, but many think his troubles were related to overuse in the WBC. He's a better bet for future success than Sean Burnett. Milledge is currently recovering from a broken finger, but is a younger and more promising all-around talent than Morgan, who is batting .277/.351/.356 this season with 27 RBI and 18 stolen bases. The move seems like a win for the Pirates, and coincides with the club's ongoing rebuilding efforts.
