 Ken Griffey Jr.-DH- MarinersNov. 12 - 2:55 pm et
Mariners signed designated hitter Ken Griffey Jr. to a one-year contract.
He's expected to receive a contract similar to last season, when he earned a $2 million base salary with additional performance incentives. Junior earned $1.5 million of a possible $3 million in incentives in 2009. Griffey, who turns 40 in November, isn't as much of a weapon against right-handed pitching anymore, so general manager Jack Zduriencik will aim to find another designated hitter this winter. Either way, Griffey will return for his 22nd professional season. With 630 career home runs -- fifth all-time -- he'll continue to cement his place in baseball history.

 Ken Griffey Jr.-DH - Mariners Nov. 11 - 5:42 pm et

Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik is open to acquiring a designated hitter even after signing Ken Griffey to a new contract, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
That's what Mariners' fans want to hear. Goodwill is fine, but if Zduriencik plans to give Griffey nearly 400 at-bats again, they'll have a hard time improving on their impressive 85-77 season. The Mariners still have interest in Russell Branyan, despite him rejecting a one-year offer this week. According to a FOXSports.com report, they have also been connected to Lyle Overbay.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports Ken Griffey's new one-year deal with the Mariners is similar to his 2009 incentive-laden contract.
Griffey was paid a base salary of $2 million and earned another $1.5 million worth of incentives for batting .214/.324/.411 with 19 dingers and 57 RBI in 2009. We'll have the exact financial details of the new contract when they become available. Junior turns 40 on November 21.

According to Larry Stone of the Seattle Times, Ken Griffey Jr. has agreed to a contract with the Mariners for 2010.
It will be Griffey's 22nd professional season. The veteran had 19 homers and 57 RBI in 454 plate appearances during the 2009 season, serving mainly as the Mariners' designated hitter. He posted a disappointing .214/.324/.411 overall batting line, but did manage a .930 OPS in the spacious confines of Safeco Field. He turns 40 years old next week.

Ken Griffey Jr.'s agent said Thursday that his client is scheduled to meet with the Mariners soon to discuss his future with the team.
It sounds like Griffey's decision on whether to continue his career won't be dragged out for the entire winter. He'll either sign on with the Mariners for another season and serve loosely as their DH, or he'll hang up his cleats for good. The veteran had 19 homers and 57 RBI in 387 at-bats this season.
