ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick reports that 41-year-old outfielder Matt Stairs has agreed to a minor league contract with the Padres.
Stairs has dropped nearly 40 pounds this winter and claims to be in great shape, but he hit just .194/.357/.379 with five home runs as a pinch-hitter for the Phillies last season. He will serve a similar role for the Friars this year if he proves himself worthy of a roster spot during spring training.

41-year-old Matt Stairs has lost 31 pounds this winter and still hopes find an invitation to Spring Training, reports Jerry Crasnick of MLB.com.
Stairs has gone from 230 pounds to 199 -- the lightest he's been in about 15 years -- thanks to a Nutrisystem program. "I'm still open for invitations," Stairs said. "I'm ready to go. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, I understand that as well." Stairs, who has 259 lifetime homers, batted just .194 in 103 at-bats with the Phillies last season.

Matt Stairs told his hometown paper Thursday that he wants to return next year for a 17th professional season.
"If I get a job, I’ll be happy. If not, I’ll be as happy as well," the 41-year-old Stairs told Maine's Bangor Daily News. "I want to keep playing. I still have the desire to play. I still love it. But I have a lot of plans in Bangor if I don’t." Stairs, who hit .194/.357/.379 as a pinch-hitter in '09, is hoping to field a few phone calls during next week's Winter Meetings.

Matt Stairs will be the Phillies' designated hitter for Game 2 of the World Series.
Raul Ibanez shifts back to left field after DHing in Game 1, with Ben Francisco going to the bench. Francisco provided a massive defensive upgrade and Stairs hit just .194 in limited playing time this season, but manager Charlie Manuel wants to get his left-handed bat in the lineup against right-hander A.J. Burnett.
