| Pedro Martinez's 2009 Profile | | It was downright depressing to see a supposedly healthy Martinez flounder in the second half of last season. He suffered a strained groin in his very first start of the year and missed two months, and in July he was troubled by soreness in his shoulder and hip before going on the bereavement list when his father died. He returned in August and had no additional physical problems, but still went 2-4 with a 5.18 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in his final 11 starts. Velocity wasn’t the sole problem, as Martinez was still hitting 90 mph on the gun with regularity. Of course, that’s well down from where he was in his glory days, but he’s pitched with that kind of arm strength before and still won. He just didn’t have the classic movement on his changeup or his typical command. Unwilling to admit defeat, Martinez is coming back for 2009, just probably not with the Mets. He may yet have some success as a six-inning pitcher, though his body isn’t likely to allow him to make 30 starts. Based on his still impressive strikeout rate, he would be worth grabbing at the end of mixed-league drafts.Updated Jul. 15: General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said that Pedro Martinez could be ready to pitch for the Phillies on July 30, when the team opens a series in San Francisco.
