 Tim Wakefield-S- Red SoxJan. 27 - 12:21 pm et
Tim Wakefield said Tuesday that he expects to serve as a full-time member of Boston's starting rotation in 2010.
Wakefield underwent back surgery in October but he's hoping to be fine by the start of spring training. And he expects to land a spot in the rotation. Things may get tricky, though, considering the Red Sox also have starters John Lackey, Jon Lester, Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Clay Buchholz all vying for spots. It's a situation to monitor this spring.

Tim Wakefield estimates he is 85 percent healed from back surgery conducted in October.
The surgery was to correct a herniated disk that caused Wakefield limited mobility for the second part of the 2009 season. "I’m going to start my throwing in January and be ready by February. I feel great, I haven’t had any setbacks at all," added Wakefield. He's on track to be at full strength for spring training.

After undergoing back surgery in October, Tim Wakefield (back) is walking without the limp in his left leg that hampered him during the latter part of the 2009 season.
"I feel great," Wakefield said. "I’m getting more strength in my calf and my hamstring. As a matter of fact, the doctor came in soon after surgery and I was doing laps around the nurses station with my wife with my IV without limping. It was that instantaneously. Dr. (Lawrence) Borges did a phenomenal job. He even said to me that he was surprised that I was pitching because the fragment they took out of my back was pretty big." The 43-year-old knuckleballer agreed to a two-year contract with the Red Sox on Monday and should be ready for the start of spring training.

Red Sox agreed to terms with RHP Tim Wakefield on a two-year contract.
The new deal takes the place of Boston's perpetual $4 million options on Wakefield, with the Red Sox reportedly guaranteeing the 43-year-old knuckleballer just $3.5 million in 2010 and $1.5 million in 2011. There are also incentives built into the contract, but lessening the upfront money is a smart move for the Red Sox with Wakefield coming off back surgery.

WEEI.com's Rob Bradford reports that the Red Sox and Tim Wakefield are close to finalizing a new two-year contract.
Boston holds perpetual $4 million options on Wakefield, but according to Bradford the new deal would guarantee him just $3.5 million in 2010 and $1.5 million in 2011. Various incentives could push his salaries higher, but obviously the Red Sox wanted to lower their up-front risk with a 43-year-old coming off back surgery.

Tim Wakefield underwent successful back surgery at Mass. General Hospital on Wednesday.
The surgery repaired a herniated disk in his lower back that limited him to just four starts after the All-Star break. Wakefield is expected to resume baseball activities in a few weeks. General manager Theo Epstein has made it clear of his intention to pick up his recurring $4 million option for 2010.
