The Rangers and RHP Chris Ray avoided arbitration on Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $975,000 contract.
Ray, who just turned 28 last week, was acquired from the Orioles last month in the Kevin Millwood trade. He struggled during his first season back from Tommy John surgery, tallying a 7.27 ERA and 2.01 WHIP in 46 appearances. There's still hope here, but he's unlikely to get many save chances in Texas.

 Chris Ray-R - Rangers Dec. 9 - 6:32 pm et

Rangers acquired RHP Chris Ray and a player to be named later from the Orioles for RHP Kevin Millwood and cash.
Ray had a disappointing 2009 campaign, finishing with a 7.27 ERA and a 2.01 WHIP in 46 appearances. But it was his first season back from Tommy John surgery and the Rangers seem to believe he can work back to form. Ray posted a 2.73 ERA in 2007 while collecting 33 saves and a 2.66 ERA in 2006.
 Kevin Millwood-S - Orioles Dec. 9 - 2:15 pm et

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports the Orioles are very close to a deal that will send reliever Chris Ray to Texas for Kevin Millwood.
The Orioles will presumably cover most of the $12 million remaining on Millwood's contract. Ray, 27, posted a miserable 7.27 ERA and 2.01 WHIP in 2009, but he has closing experience and is only two years removed from a 33-save season. Millwood, 34, went 13-10 in 2009 with a 3.67 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP over 31 starts. He'll be an excellent addition to the Baltimore staff.

 Kevin Millwood-S - Orioles Dec. 9 - 11:16 am et

According to the Baltimore Sun's Peter Schmuck, Orioles officials "are getting more confident" that they can complete a deal for Kevin Millwood.
The Orioles and Rangers have shared conversations on the topic throughout this week's Winter Meetings. According to one rumored scenario, Baltimore would send reliever 27-year-old Chris Ray to Texas and pick up most of Millwood's $12 million salary for next season. The 34-year-old Millwood went 13-10 in 2009 with a 3.67 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP over 31 starts.

 Chris Ray-R - Rangers Nov. 24 - 4:45 pm et

Chris Ray, who is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter, hopes that he isn't non-tendered in December.
"Hopefully, I'm still here," said Ray. "Obviously, it's out of my hands. Now, it's just whether I fit into their plans or not, and I hope I do. I see a lot of good things happening here. But you can't bring me back next year expecting me to do what I did this year, because that would be pointless. I expect to have a much better season next year. Ray, 27, struggled last season in his return from Tommy John surgery, posting a 7.27 ERA and 2.01 WHIP in 46 appearances. The Orioles could decide to cut him loose in December, but since they don't have a clear-cut favorite for saves moving forward, there's a pretty good chance he's back. Ray saved 33 games as a 24-year-old in 2006.

 Chris Ray-R - Rangers Jul. 31 - 1:52 pm et

Orioles activated RHP Chris Ray from the 15-day disabled list.
Ray had pitched three hitless innings since beginning his rehab assignment. He was supposed to take over as the Orioles' closer once George Sherrill vacated the position, but he still has a lot to prove at this point. The odds are against him picking up more than a couple of saves during the final two months.
