Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Monday that he has not begun contract extension negotiations with Derek Jeter or Mariano Rivera.
Both players are eligible for free agency at the conclusion of the 2010 season, but the Yankees don't seem worried. As long as Jeter and Mo continue to produce at an elite level, deals will almost certainly get done. Jeter, 35, batted .334 last season with 18 homers while Rivera, 40, posted a 1.76 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP and converted 44 saves in 46 chances.

Mariano Rivera revealed to the media Friday that he pitched the entire World Series with a painful rib cage injury.
Rivera suffered the injury while throwing 34 pitches in Game 6 of the ALCS. "It was manageable," Mo said. "[Head trainer Gene Monahan] did a tremendous job. Thank God we were able to do what we did, to put me on the field every day so I would have a chance." The 39-year-old also announced Friday that he's hoping to pitch for another five years.

Mariano Rivera, who turns 40 this winter, told Yankees fans Friday that he hopes to continue pitching for another five years.
Rivera made the claim during the Yanks' championship parade in Manhattan. He may have been caught up in the euphoria of the moment, but it's not that crazy of a thought. Rivera is still dominating batters using basically one pitch and will continue to do so as he long as he maintains his control.

Hideki Matsui tied the single-game World Series record with six RBI as the Yankees finished off the Phillies in six games.
The Yankees have won their 27th World Championship and their first since 2000. Entering Wednesday's Game 6, much of the concern was about Andy Pettitte starting on only three days' rest, but Pedro Martinez was the one who looked fatigued. Pettitte allowed three runs over 5 1/3, while Joba Chamberlain, Damaso Marte and Mariano Rivera combined for 3 1/3 scoreless frames to bring a World Championship back to the Bronx. Matsui, who was 8-for-13 (.615) with three home runs and eight RBI, was named the series MVP. Time for Joe Girardi to get a new uniform number.

Manager Joe Girardi hopes to avoid using Mariano Rivera for multiple innings on Saturday.
Girardi said "two innings tonight is probably out of the question," but given the state of Phil Hughes (9.64 ERA during the postseason), we'll believe it when we see it. Rivera has notched two-inning saves in each of his last two appearances.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, MLB "found no evidence that Mariano Rivera spit on the ball" after reviewing video and photos from Game 3 of the ALCS.
Rivera clearly spit near the baseball, but it's unclear where the saliva landed and he presumably would have tried to mask what he was doing in some way if it was an attempt to cheat. Sherman notes that "Rivera is a player who spits constantly while in action" and has never been accused of doctoring the baseball in the past.
