Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that Mike Sweeney still wants to play this season.
Sweeney, 36, batted .281/.335/.442 with eight home runs and 34 RBI with the Mariners last season, but was bothered by his balky back early on. The .298 lifetime hitter is almost exclusively a designated hitter at this point, limiting the pool of teams who could afford to sign him, but he's still a very effective right-handed bat.

Sweeney left Thursday's game with a bruised foot.

Mike Sweeney left Thursday night's game in the second inning after being hit on the foot by a Ricky Romero pitch.
Sweeney was able to jog to first base and made it to second on a sacrifice fly, but was replaced by Ken Griffey Jr. in the third inning. It's not yet clear if he suffered anything more than a bruise.

Mike Sweeney is batting .359/.405/.538 in the month of September.
Sweeney is doing a stellar job of making teams aware of his impending free agency. He's raised his batting average over 20 points in the last 19 games and said Saturday that he's finally having a blast. "I don’t remember playing a September and having this much fun," said the 36-year-old. "This has been the most enjoyable year of my career. We’ll see if there’s an opportunity to build upon it." It's not yet clear if the M's want him back for 2010.

Mike Sweeney said Tuesday that he'd like to return for the 2010 season.
Sweeney, a 36-year-old impending free agent, will first have to find a willing suitor. He's batting .277/.335/.441 this year, but is limited to first base and DH duties due to a fragile knee and back.

Ken Griffey, Jr. has been scratched from Friday's lineup with a tendinitis in his right knee.
Griffey received six days of rest for the aforementioned knee, returned to action Thursday and is right back out Friday. Consider him day to day. Mike Sweeney replaced him at DH.
