Rich Aurilia hopes to play with the Mets or Yankees this season, reports Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News.
"We know nothing is imminent, but hopefully we keep in contact with them," said the Brooklyn-native and St. John's graduate. "It’s just been preliminary, but they said there could be some interest down the road. So I’m concentrating more on just making sure my body is ready. I still have the desire to compete and play. I can contribute. I’ve been throwing, swinging the bat and actually feel pretty good." The 38-year-old infielder was limited to just 60 games last season due to an ankle injury, batting .213/.256/.279 with two homers and 16 RBI in 122 at-bats. An invite to Spring Training isn't out of the question for either team, but he's unlikely to add much usefulness at this stage of his career.

 Rich Aurilia-1B - Giants Sep. 1 - 2:45 pm et

Giants activated first baseman Rich Aurilia from the 15-day disabled list.
Aurilia has been sidelined since August 12 due to left ankle tendinitis, but his recent stints on the disabled list seem to have as much to do with getting more useful players on the roster than anything else. Buried on the bench with a .220/.267/.294 line in 109 at-bats this season, his fantasy relevance is all but gone.

Rich Aurilia (ankle) is ready to return, but won't be activated from the disabled list until rosters expand on September 1.
It shows you exactly how much Aurilia is needed on this ball club. He'll be nothing more than a bench player once he's activated. "I'm healthy, and I'm ready to play," the veteran said Thursday, questioning the Giants' motives. "I think I've been the healthiest guy on the team most of the year."

Giants placed first baseman Rich Aurilia on the 15-day disabled list with left ankle tendinitis.
An earlier report indicated that Aurilia was being released, but instead he'll serve a DL stint that could run until Sept. 1, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Nate Schierholtz takes his place on the active roster.

Freddy Sanchez (sore shoulder) was held out of the lineup.
The Giants were set to call up Nate Schierholtz but held off for now. They elected to keep Rich Aurilia for infield depth, who could be released soon. They'll check on Sanchez tomorrow and then make a roster decision.

The San Francisco Chronicle speculates that Rich Aurilia was informed after Monday's game that he's being released.
Ryan Garko's arrival made Aurilia even more expendable than he already was, but the Giants still opted to activate the veteran on Friday because Juan Uribe was dealing with some leg problems. Now that Nate Schierholz is ready to return, Aurilia is the logical choice to go.
