 Scott Rolen-3B- RedsDec. 19 - 7:20 pm et
Reds signed 3B Scott Rolen to a three-year, $23.63 million contract extension.
Under the terms of the new agreement, Rolen will earn $6 million in 2010 and $6.5 million in 2011 and 2012. He'll also receive a $5 million signing bonus deferred over the length of the contract. It's a pretty unselfish decision by Rolen, as the move provides the Reds with considerable salary relief going into next season. The 35-year-old third baseman batted .305/.368/.455 with 11 home runs and 67 RBI in '09 and didn't show any signs of losing a step defensively. If he can play anywhere close to the 128 games he did last season through 2012 -- his age 37 season -- the Reds will probably be very happy.

 Scott Rolen-3B - Reds Dec. 19 - 1:33 pm et

Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports that Scott Rolen has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him with the Reds through 2012.
Rolen will earn $23.625 million over the next three seasons. He restructured his contract in order to get it done, as instead of earning $11 million next season, he will now receive $6 million in 2010, $6.5 million in 2011 and $6.5 million in 2012. Rolen will also receive a $5 million signing bonus that is deferred over the next three seasons. The move provides the Reds with some much-needed salary relief, but he'll be 37 by the end of the contract. Rolen batted .305/.368/.455 with 11 home runs and 67 RBI with the Reds and Blue Jays in '09, but hasn't played in more than 128 games since 2006.

Scott Rolen was scratched from Friday's lineup with back spasms.
Rolen is 34 and has a battered body from years of aggressive play at third base, so these type of injuries should come as no surprise. He's batting .267/.350/.367 in 120 at-bats since arriving in Cincinnati.
