Rangers signed designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero to a one-year, $5 million contract with a 2011 mutual option.
Guerrero, 34, batted just .295/.334/.460 in 2009 with 15 home runs and 50 RBI in 383 at-bats with the Angels last season and is a serious injury risk. That said, the price was right and the risk is low for the Rangers. Guerrero will take over designated duties in Arlington, where he boasts a .394/.471/.705 batting line in 50 career games. The move relegates David Murphy to a fourth outfielder role.

 Vladimir Guerrero-DH - Rangers Jan. 9 - 8:05 pm et

According to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan, the Rangers and Vladimir Guerrero have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with an option for 2011.
A significantly better choice for Texas than Jermaine Dye would have been. Guerrero may see sporadic outfield duty, particularly in NL parks, but he'll be the Rangers' primary DH. The move makes David Murphy a fourth outfielder, but all signs pointed to that happening.

A source informed Anthony Andro of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that nothing has changed in negotiations between the Rangers and free agent outfielder Vladimir Guerrero.
This refutes not only the $7 million that the Rangers reportedly offered Guerrero, but also the notion that they are "finalizing" a one-year contract. Andro doesn't doubt that the two sides are talking -- the Rangers have been connected to the 35-year-old all winter long -- but nothing has happened yet.

A source has informed Jim Bowden of Sirius XM that the Rangers are finalizing a one-year contract with Vladimir Guerrero.
It's probably worth noting that Bowden has been wrong before, but he's citing a "source close to" Vlad and it's common knowledge that the 35-year-old slugger has been in contact with the Rangers all winter. If the news is true, he will take over designated duties in Arlington, Texas, where he boasts a 394/.471/.705 batting line in 50 career games.

According to Richard Durrett of ESPN Dallas, free agent Vladimir Guerrero is holding out for a two-year deal.
The Rangers reportedly offered Guerrero a one-year contract in the $5-$7 million range this week but he "wasn't particularly happy" with the proposal, according to MLB.com. The 35-year-old hit just .295/.334/.460 last season and is a serious injury risk. He will have to lower his demands eventually and Texas management would be wise to wait him out.

MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan heard from a source that free agent Vladimir Guerrero "wasn't particularly happy" with the Rangers' recent offer to him.
Reports have varied, but it sounds like the offer was in the $5-$7 million range. Vlad has 407 career home runs and an impressive .954 career OPS, but he turns 35 in February and hit just .295/.334/.460 last season. In this market, and with his recent injury history, Guerrero may want to take the Rangers' offer and run with it. Hideki Matsui had much better numbers in 2009 and landed just $6.5 million on a one-year deal last month.
