Chris Carpenter was named the National League's Comeback Player of the Year for 2009.
No surprise, here. Carpenter made only four starts over the last two seasons combined, but he was healthy enough in 2009 to return to his previously-dominant form, going 17-4 with a National League-leading 2.24 ERA. Carpenter's last two seasons were lost due to elbow and shoulder problems. This year, he had an 11-game winning streak from July 5-September 7 and posted an 11-0 record with a 1.58 ERA over 15 starts against NL Central opponents.
