Manager Tony La Russa said Chris Carpenter will start on short rest if the Cardinals make it to Game 4.
They'll have to get through Vicente Padilla first. Carpenter threw 105 pitches over five innings in a 5-3 loss to the Dodgers in Game 1 on Wednesday. He has never started on three day's rest in his career. If it comes to it, the Dodgers will likely counter with Chad Billingsley.

Manager Tony La Russa suggested Thursday that the may use Chris Carpenter on short rest if the Cardinals make it to Game 4.
The Birds are down 2-0 in their NLDS matchup with the Dodgers and are sending Joel Pineiro to the hill Saturday against Vicente Padilla. If the Cardinals can survive that game, they'll either go with Kyle Lohse, John Smoltz or Carpenter for Game 4. Carp threw 105 pitches in Game 1 and a good amount of them were of the laboring variety. "It depends on how he comes out of it," La Russa said. "You read the situation and proceed accordingly. He's still a possibility."

Chris Carpenter surrendered four runs in five innings Wednesday in a Game 1 loss to the Dodgers.
Carpenter walked four batters for the first time all year and hit a batter in a sloppy outing. He had been 3-0 with a 1.40 ERA in his career in NLDS action.

Chris Carpenter was named the National League's Comeback Player of the Year for 2009.
No surprise, here. Carpenter made only four starts over the last two seasons combined, but he was healthy enough in 2009 to return to his previously-dominant form, going 17-4 with a National League-leading 2.24 ERA. Carpenter's last two seasons were lost due to elbow and shoulder problems. This year, he had an 11-game winning streak from July 5-September 7 and posted an 11-0 record with a 1.58 ERA over 15 starts against NL Central opponents.

Chris Carpenter delivered a grand slam and a two-run double and blanked the Reds for five innings Thursday as part of a 13-0 rout.
Wow. The slam off Kip Wells was his first homer in 288 career at-bats. He entered with a career .105/.134/.118 line, making him one of the game's worst hitting pitchers. He actually doubled his career RBI total in his first two at-bats today. Of course, he was also pretty good on the mound, even if it did take him 90 pitches to get through five innings. The win makes him 17-4 with a 2.24 ERA. He locked up the NL ERA title with his performance. Even if Tim Lincecum throws a shutout today, he'd finish at 2.38.

If the schedule plays out as planned, Chris Carpenter will start Game 1 of the NLDS for the Cardinals.
Adam Wainwright will start Game 2, and Joel Pineiro will start Game 3. "Carp's the acknowledged leader of our staff — and Adam is closing quickly," manager Tony La Russa said Wednesday. It's a heck of a one-two punch.
