Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Saturday that Austin Jackson will bat leadoff in spring games.
We should find out quickly, then, if Jackson is indeed ready for a full-time gig in the majors. The 22-year-old outfielder hit .288/.356/.410 in parts of five seasons in New York's minor league system and had a .759 OPS with 24 steals last year at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Butch Wynegar, the Yankees' Triple-A hitting coach, doesn't believe Austin Jackson is ready for full-time duties in the major leagues.
The Tigers acquired Jackson this winter in the blockbuster three-team deal that centered around Curtis Granderson and are planning on starting him in center field this season. "He still is raw, still has a lot to learn, but he's an intelligent kid and a good athlete -- and he wants to learn," Wynegar said. "I basically told the Yankees at the end of the year, if they were thinking about him being their center fielder this coming year (2010), I didn't know if he was ready yet." The Tigers will find out first-hand.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski indicated Thursday that Austin Jackson will open 2010 as the club's starting center fielder.
The Tigers added Jackson last month from the Yankees in the three-team deal involving Curtis Granderson. The 22-year-old outfielder hit .288/.356/.410 in parts of five seasons in New York's minor league system. "We anticipate he'll be ready to play," said Dombrowski. "There are a lot of guys that can play center field for us, but we anticipate he'll be ready." The learning curve will be steep for Jackson, but he's a fine flier pickup in AL-only leagues.

Tigers acquired OF Austin Jackson, LHPs Daniel Schlereth and Phil Coke and RHP Max Scherzer; Diamondbacks acquired RHPs Ian Kennedy and Edwin Jackson; Yankees acquired OF Curtis Granderson.
Jackson could find himself as the Tigers' Opening Day center fielder in 2010. The 22-year-old outfielder had a .288/.356/.410 line in parts of five seasons in New York's minor league system. While Jackson projects as a 20-homer guy down the line, he has just 30 home runs in over 2,000 at-bats in the minors. He spent the entire '09 season at the Triple-A level, but there's nobody standing in his way in Detroit next season, barring another trade.

Yankees purchased the contracts of OF Austin Jackson, INFs Reegie Corona, Eduardo Nunez, Kevin Russo and RHPs Hector Noesi, Ivan Nova and Romulo Sanchez.
The seven are now protected from December's Rule 5 draft. Jackson, 22, batted .300/.354/.405 with four home runs, nine triples, 23 doubles, 65 RBI and 24 stolen bases in 132 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2009, and is often mentioned as New York's center fielder of the future.

According to MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo, Austin Jackson may be on his way to Cincinnati to complete the Yankees' trade for Jerry Hairston Jr.
We sure hope Mayo is wrong. Jackson, 22, is among the top prospects in the game, batting .307/.371/.424 with four home runs, 39 RBI and 17 stolen bases this season for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
