Reds signed shortstop Orlando Cabrera to a one-year, $3 million contract.
In a clever bit of accounting, Cincinatti paid for roughly half of Cabrera's salary by dumping Willy Taveras' corpse on Oakland and taking the negligible utilityman talent dropoff from Adam Rosales to Aaron Miles. Cabrera's deal also contains a $3 million mutual option for 2011 with a $1 million buyout. He will start at shortstop and probably bat second for the Reds, providing a nice upgrade over Paul Janish. Cabrera, 35, batted .284/.316/.389 last season with nine home runs and 77 RBI in 656 at-bats between the A's and Twins.

A source told MLB.com that Orlando Cabrera will take a one-year, $3 million contract to play fir the Reds.
The deal also contains a $3 million option for 2011 with a $1 million buyout. We're going to assume that's either a player option or a mutual option, since there's no way Cabrera would want to cap his 2011 salary at $3 million. Cabrera will start at shortstop and probably bat second for the Reds. He'll be a nice upgrade over Paul Janish, even though the Reds will lose some defense with the switch.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that free agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera is leaning towards signing with the Reds.
Cabrera, 35, is also weighing an offer from the Rockies, with a decision expected as soon as today. There's no question that Cincinnati can provide him with the most amount of playing time, as rightly or wrongly, he'll get the nod over Paul Janish at short, but he'd have a better shot at winning in Colorado.

ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that free agent infielder Orlando Cabrera will chose between the Rockies and Reds on Friday.
The Nationals might also be alive in negotiations, depending on who you ask. Cabrera, 35, batted .284/.316/.705 last season with nine home runs and 77 RBI in 656 at-bats between the A's and Twins. Cincinnati can provide him with the most amount of playing time, but he's not getting any younger and may want to play for a team that can contend in 2010 like the Rockies.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that free agent infielder Orlando Cabrera is "choosing between offers" from the Rockies and Reds.
The Reds can offer much more playing time, but the 35-year-old Cabrera may prefer to play for a potential contender like the Rockies. He batted .284/.316/.705 last season with nine home runs and 77 RBI in 708 plate appearances between the Athletics and Twins and earned $4 million.

The Reds have considered signing free agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera, reports John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
"We’ve kicked it around a little bit," general manager Walt Jocketty said. "We’re not sure it’s the right fit for us. And I don’t know if financially we’re in position to do it." The Reds have also considered Alfredo Amezaga, but he is an injury concern working his way back from microfracture surgery on his knee. If the Reds fail to sign a free agent, the light-hitting Paul Janish will open the season as the starter.
