 Jason Varitek-C- Red SoxNov. 12 - 2:14 pm et
Jason Varitek exercised his $3 million option to remain with the Red Sox.
Varitek could earn up to $2 million in additional incentives based on playing time, but since Victor Martinez is expected to be the full-time catcher in 2010, he is unlikely to meet the appropriate criteria. The 37-year-old backstop batted just .209/.313/.390 with 14 home runs and 51 RBI in 2009 and would have been hard-pressed to find a better deal on the open market. At the very least, he'll be Josh Beckett's personal catcher.

 Jason Varitek-C - Red Sox Nov. 11 - 4:50 pm et

According to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe, Jason Varitek has exercised his $3 million player option to remain with the Red Sox in 2010.
After much deliberation, Varitek has decided to stay in Boston. With a .209/.313/.390 line, including a .157/.250/.239 showing after the All-Star break, it would have been very difficult for him to find a better deal on the open market. Now he'll be one of the highest paid backup catchers around.

Jason Varitek has until midnight Wednesday to decide whether he wants to exercise his $3 million player option for 2010.
It's not clear what the hold-up is. Varitek may be searching for a starting job, but he isn't likely to find one and definitely won't be able to obtain the kind of salary the Red Sox must pay him in 2010. The 37-year-old hit just .209/313/.390 this season and .157/.250/.239 after the All-Star break.

Updating a previous item, Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes that the Mets have no interest in Jason Varitek.
Well that takes care of that. Upon speculating that New York could have interest in Varitek if he declines his player option with the Red Sox, two Mets officials spoke with Sherman, insisting that they want a catcher who can play in at least 100 games. The Mets don't believe the 37-year-old Varitek could hold up to the grind of a full schedule.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post suggests that the Mets could have interest in Jason Varitek.
Varitek will almost surely exercise his $3 million player option with the Red Sox, but if he doesn't feel like playing expensive backup to Victor Martinez, he may choose to gamble and test the market. Varitek has been connected to the Mets as recently as last offseason. Sherman writes that the 37-year-old backstop would provide veteran leadership and some pop behind the plate that the Mets sorely need.

According to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, Red Sox GM Theo Epstein said Jason Varitek has not made a decision about his 2010 player option.
It's almost a given that Varitek will eventually exercise the option. It's worth $3 million and contains up to $2 million worth of incentives. He'd be hard-pressed to find that kind of money on the open market. Then again, perhaps he doesn't want to serve as a backup to Victor Martinez. Stay tuned.
