Rockies released RHP Russ Ortiz.

Ortiz leaves his third organization this year (Astros, Yankees). He may latch on with another team on a minor league deal in spring training but simply has not been a good pitcher since 2004. It's time for teams to move on.

Diamond Leung reports that the Colorado Rockies have released Russ Ortiz.

Ortiz, 35, made the Houston Astros out of spring training and chewed up some decent innings before tailing off. He then signed a deal with the Yankees before later optioning out. For the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate, Ortiz gave up 12 runs in 14 innings. From 2005-9 including a hiatus in 2008, Ortiz is 10-28 with a 6.56 ERA in 312 2/3 innings. Perhaps we've finally heard the last of him.

Rockies signed RHP Russ Ortiz to a minor league contract.

Ortiz got his Rockies career underway Sunday with four innings of three-run ball at Triple-A Colorado Springs. He'll need to make an effective start or two before the club considers calling him up. Of course, there's a deadline: Ortiz must be promoted by September 1, when rosters expand.

According to MLB.com, the Rockies are close to agreement on a minor league deal with right-hander Russ Ortiz.

The Rockies are also expected to announce the signing of Jason Giambi on Sunday. Loading up on veterans isn't a bad idea for a team in the playoff hunt. Ortiz went 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA in a handful of starts within the Yankees' farm system and is worth the risk for a club that just lost Aaron Cook.

Yankees released RHP Russ Ortiz.

Ortiz allowed three runs over four innings Sunday in his third start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees asked him to stay with the organization, but a clause in his contract allowed him to opt out Monday. He's hoping to sign on with another contender and get a shot in the big leagues.

Yankees signed RHP Russ Ortiz to a minor league contract.

Ortiz will start his Yankees career at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he'll join fellow cast-offs Josh Towers and Jason Hirsh. Ortiz, 35, was 3-6 with a 5.57 ERA for the Astros this season.
