| Jarrod Washburn's 2009 Profile | | After 2 1/2 years of largely mediocre pitching, Washburn had his best run as a Mariner leading up to the trade deadline last season. It looked like perfect timing, and all indications were that the Mariners had the chance to dump the final year and a third of his four-year, $38 million contract on the Yankees. The only problem was that the old regime wanted actual talent in return. The Yankees were too smart for that, so Washburn stayed, went 0-5 with a 5.45 ERA in August and was then limited to one inning in September by a strained abdominal muscle. Washburn’s fastball has slipped to the 85-88 mph range and he’s never had an above-average second pitch, so it’s pretty amazing that he’s still as decent as he is. He won’t have any fantasy value as part of Seattle’s rotation to open the season, but perhaps he will if he makes his way to a contender later on.Updated Jul. 12: Jarrod Washburn held the Rangers to one run and four hits over seven innings in a victory Saturday. He couldn't quite match Monday's one-hit shutout, but he was excellent again.
