 Eric Chavez-3B- AthleticsJan. 21 - 8:03 pm et
Eric Chavez is prepared to play a variety of roles this season.
Chavez has battled career-threatening back injuries since late in the 2007 season and is no longer a reliable starter at third base. He's willing to play any position in Oakland, and even ordered a first baseman's mitt this winter and a glove for the outfield. The 32-year-old is hoping to test his strength this spring. With a strong showing he may be worth drafting in AL-only leagues, but he is otherwise worthless in fantasy realms.

 Kevin Kouzmanoff-3B - Athletics Jan. 16 - 8:30 pm et

Athletics acquired third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and second baseman Eric Sogard from the Padres for outfielders Aaron Cunningham and Scott Hairston.
Kouzmanoff's approach at the plate is broken, but he's still a whole lot better than what the A's have run out at third base in years. He'll play awfully steady defense and probably drive in 80-90 runs in the middle of the order. What this means for Chavez is anyone's guess. The A's can try to find room for him at DH, but he'd have to prove he's worthy of the defensive downgrade required from moving Jack Cust to the outfield. In truth, this is the A's way of saying that they just don't see Chavez contributing in the final year of his contract.
 Eric Chavez-3B - Athletics Jan. 11 - 9:23 pm et

Eric Chavez, who battled a career-threatening back injury last year, expects to play only "three or four days a week" at third base this season.
Chavez underwent a microdiscectomy on his back in June and played only eight total games in 2009. If his body won't cooperate this season, he may even retire. "Either way, I'm prepared. And happy," said the third baseman. "If my body just doesn't let it happen, I'm ready to move on with my life."

Eric Chavez (back) plans to begin throwing in early January.
Chavez underwent a second microdiscectomy on his back in June and played only eight total games in 2009. He's hoping to return to third base for the upcoming season but still has a whole lot of proving to do. The 32-year-old should be avoided in almost every fantasy draft this spring.

 Eric Chavez-3B - Athletics Aug. 26 - 10:08 pm et

Eric Chavez will attempt to return to play third base for the A's next spring training.
"I'll try to get in great shape, roll the dice and see what happens," Chavez said. He underwent a second microdiscectomy on his back in June. There's no guarantee that he'll ever be a major contributor again.

 Eric Chavez-3B - Athletics Jun. 23 - 10:11 pm et

Eric Chavez underwent a second microdiscectomy on his back Tuesday.
Although he's hoping the successful surgery will allow him to return in time for spring training, there's no guarantee that he'll ever be a major contributor again.
