Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes that Carlos Beltran (knee) is furious with the Mets.
Sherman writes that Beltran wonders if he should have played at all last season and therefore doesn't expect him to prioritize the team this time around. How he knows exactly what is going on in Beltran's head is anybody's guess, but the Mets will have to get by with Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews Jr. in center field for at least a little while.

 Carlos Beltran-OF - Mets Jan. 15 - 4:18 pm et

Mets general manager Omar Minaya told Newsday on Friday morning that he did not approve Carlos Beltran's recent knee procedure.
"Carlos did speak to me before surgery and we had a good conversation," Minaya said in a telephone interview. "It was one of those things as far as he was telling me what the second opinion was and all... I didn't give an OK." And the public relations nightmare continues. It's incredible, and borderline upsetting, that the Mets have chosen to deal with this issue so publicly. Beltran is expected to miss at least the first month of the 2010 season.

Carlos Beltran said Thursday that he cleared his right knee surgery with Mets general manager Omar Minaya before undergoing the procedure this week.
"He did not ask me to wait, or to get another doctor’s opinion," Beltran told FOXSports.com's Jon Paul Morosi. "He just wished me well." Clearly there was a communication breakdown somewhere along the way, because Mets assistant GM John Ricco told the media Thursday afternoon that his staff wanted Beltran to get a third opinion before following through with the procedure. The Mets have another public relations nightmare on their hands and a major hole in their outfield heading into spring training.

Mets assistant general manager John Ricco announced that the team wanted Carlos Beltran to have a third opinion on his right knee before deciding upon surgery.
"The surgery was performed before we had an opportunity to do that," said Ricco. The issue at hand is whether the surgery was "elective" or necessary. Beltran and his agent Scott Boras believe it was a necessary procedure, while the Mets clearly believe otherwise. The Mets could still file a grievance, but that could have some long-lasting effects on the future of the franchise. Strictly from a baseball perspective, Beltran is expected to be sidelined for at least 12 weeks before resuming baseball activities.

Carlos Beltran's agent Scott Boras told Andrew Marchand of ESPN Radio in New York that the Mets provided workman's compensation paperwork to pay for the procedure on his client's right knee.
"The Mets gave consent to pay for the surgery," Boras said, noting that the office for Dr. Richard Steadman, the surgeon who performed Carlos Beltran's knee surgery, received the paperwork from team trainer Ray Ramirez. Boras also said he spoke with both Jeff Wilpon and Omar Minaya about the surgery on Tuesday while Beltran also spoke with Minaya. The Mets are expected to address the matter with the media at 2 p.m. ET.

Carlos Beltran's agent Scott Boras told the Associated Press that his client was within his rights to undergo surgery on his right knee without the Mets' approval.
According to Boras, the language in the Beltran's contract requires advance written permission only for elective operations. "This was necessary surgery, necessary surgery to work," Boras said. The Mets may have a claim that this was elective. Oddly, Beltran did actually receive consent from team physician Dr. David Altcheck on the surgery, but according to a source, Altcheck was not authorized to give consent because he is not a team official. Either way, the Mets are expected to hold a conference call on Thursday to discuss the situation.
