Luis Castillo remains "highly unlikely" to be traded, according to FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

Rosenthal writes that the Mets don't have the money to pay Castillo's way with another team and then sign a free agent second baseman such as Orlando Hudson. Rosenthal shoots down the Castillo for Mike Lowell rumors, writing that it is not financially realistic for either team. Castillo is owed $12 million over the next two years, while Lowell will be paid $12 million in 2010, the last year of his deal.

WEEI.com's Rob Bradford speculates that Mike Lowell probably won't be traded until spring training, if at all.

Lowell still has to prove to teams that his right thumb is in fine shape and still has another month of rehab ahead. As of now, he fits snugly behind first baseman Casey Kotchman on Boston's depth chart. The 35-year-old hit .290/.337/.474 last season to go along with 17 homers and 75 RBI.

Joe McDonald of the Providence Journal believes a Mike Lowell-for-Luis Castillo swap is "highly unlikely."

As McDonald notes, the trade only makes sense for one side -- the Mets -- and even then it's not clear if they can afford to take on all of Lowell's remaining salary. Shipping the 35-year-old third baseman to the Athletics, Twins or Mariners should net a better return for the Red Sox. Look for trade talks to heat up later this week and into the weekend.

A source told WEEI.com's Rob Bradford Monday evening that a Mike Lowell-for-Luis Castillo swap is "not close."

The deal only really makes sense for the Mets, who could use Lowell at first base and would like to bring in free agent second baseman Orland Hudson. For the trade to work, New York would presumably have to take on most of Lowell's remaining salary and might have to eat some of Castillo's as well. GM Omar Minaya and Co. might not be willing to go that far, seeing as they just handed a major contract to outfielder Jason Bay.

According to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick, the Red Sox at one point talked to the Mets about a Mike Lowell-for-Luis Castillo trade.

It's not clear if the talks are ongoing or how serious the two sides might be, but the deal does make some sense, at least for the Mets. Lowell could play first base in New York, and moving Castillo would allow the club to chase free agent second baseman Orlando Hudson. The Red Sox landed Adrian Beltre on Monday evening, making Lowell an even more expendable commodity.

Mike Lowell underwent successful surgery Wednesday on his right thumb.

Doctors discovered a 95-percent tear in the radial collateral ligament of his thumb, but were able to fix the issue and expect him to be fine in six-to-eight weeks. Once he's healthy the Red Sox may try to deal him again and could decide to reopen talks with the Rangers for catcher Max Ramirez.
