Mike Lowell isn't fazed with being the subject of trade rumors.
"I figure I am no stranger to trade rumors and I understand the team’s desire to always look to upgrade," Lowell said in an e-mail. "This situation is much different than last year because I was hoping to avoid a very awkward situation of rehabbing in order to get traded if the Teixiera signing would have occurred." Lowell, who has one year and $12 million remaining on his contract, will become expendable if the Red Sox are able to add a big bat like Adrian Gonzalez. With a hip injury and the addition of Victor Martinez, the 35-year-old third baseman was used sparingly down the stretch, finishing with a .290/.337/.474 slash-line to go along with 17 homers and 75 RBI.

 David Ortiz-DH - Red Sox Oct. 2 - 4:44 pm et

Dvid Ortiz is not in the lineup for Friday's affair with Cleveland.
Ortiz is sitting against left-hander Jeremy Sowers as a normal day off. However, don't be surprised to see him make a pinch-hit appearance: he's two home runs from 30 and three RBI from 100: goals both he and the Sox would love to see him get. Mike Lowell moves from the hot corner to the DH.

Mike Lowell fouled a pitch off the inside of his left ankle Thursday evening but was able to stay in the game.
Lowell was taken for precautionary X-rays late Thursday night. They came back negative, as expected. "I figured if this was maybe June or something, I might have come out of the game," he said. "I think it’s important to try to get at-bats." He is hoping to start on Friday.

Mike Lowell expects to return in three days after receiving an injection in his hip on Monday.
Lowell's hip was administered Synvisc and some cortisone. Doctors also removed fluid from the area. It was the second time of the season that Lowell has received a hip injection, the last coming in July. "I don’t think this was a necessity, but why not do something that’s not going to hurt me and will make me feel better," Lowell said.
