Nationals manager Jim Riggleman has not spoken recently to Cristian Guzman about a move to second base.
"No, those discussions took place in September," said the Nats' skipper. "Any follow-up I've had has been physical, medical, with regard to his recovery from his (shoulder) surgery. We were not able to do anything with him to get him acclimated to second base in September or October. It would all just be talk at this point anyway. We just want to get on the field and work. Cristian is aware it could go either way. He could be our second baseman, or he could be our shortstop, and he'll help us no matter which way it is." Ian Desmond looked like he would be provided an opportunity to be the team's starting shortstop, but Guzman could remain at shortstop if the Nationals were able to add a solid defensive second baseman like Adam Kennedy or Orlando Hudson. Stay tuned.

 Ian Desmond-SS - Nationals Jan. 13 - 10:48 am et

Ian Desmond believes he's ready to take over starting shortstop duties for the Nationals this season.
The Nats are still piecing together their roster, hoping a few bargains will fall to them just before spring training. If they land Orlando Hudson, their most desired target, things could get complicated on the Washington infield with Cristian Guzman in limbo. Either way, Desmond thinks he's ready to be the guy at short. "I feel I'm confident about my abilities to play," he said. "I think I bring a lot to a team." Desmond hit a combined .321 with 11 home runs and 44 RBI on a few different levels last season.

Cristian Guzman isn't a lock to play second base for the Nationals in 2010, reports Byron Kerr of MASNSports.com.
"It is not cast in stone that Cristian Guzman will play second base. It is based on a lot of things," said manager Jim Riggleman. "Wherever we need him to play he is going to play. But for instance, if the coaching staff and Mike Rizzo think he just doesn't look comfortable there and doesn't look good there, we know his arm is stronger and we can leave him at short." There's still a lot to be determined in Washington's infield, as they've been discussed as a possible landing spot for free agent second baseman Orlando Hudson. Ian Desmond was expected to be given a shot to be the club's Opening Day shortstop, but he may have to wait a little longer at Triple-A.

 Cristian Guzman-SS - Nationals Nov. 12 - 8:19 pm et

Nationals manager Jim Riggleman said Thursday that Cristian Guzman will play second base for the club in 2010.
Guzman underwent surgery on his throwing shoulder in October. He's expected to be ready by the start of spring training, but the Nats believe he won't have the kind of range he once did. Ian Desmond, who hit .280/.380/.561 with four home runs and 12 RBI as a September call-up, could open the season as Washington's starting shortstop.

 Cristian Guzman-SS - Nationals Oct. 7 - 2:01 pm et

Cristian Guzman, scheduled to have surgery on his right shoulder on Thursday, is likely shifting to second base in 2010.
No word yet on when he'll be ready for baseball activities, but chances are that Guzman will be back in time for spring training. As for the switch from shortstop to second, the Nationals reportedly believe Guzman no longer has the range to play short. This would appear to open an opportunity for Ian Desmond, who posted an 879 OPS with four homers in an 82 at-bat audition down the stretch this season.

 Cristian Guzman-SS - Nationals Sep. 24 - 9:42 am et

Cristian Guzman revealed Wednesday evening that he has a tender right shoulder and will take Thursday's game off.
Guzman made two throwing errors in the ninth inning before revealing his minor injury in a post-game interview. He's apparently been playing with the shoulder tenderness for a month, but will wait until the offseason to truly deal with it. The 31-year-old is hitting .285 with six homers and 50 RBI.
