Dodgers signed RHP Guillermo Mota, who had been with the Brewers, to a one-year, $2.35 million contract.
It's completely backwards that the flailing economy seems to be doing more of a number on the genuine talents in free agency than completely fungible players like Mota. Mediocre middle relievers and average utilitymen are still commanding $2 million per year for some reason. Mota had a 1.59 ERA after the break last season, but it was just 22 1/3 innings. The Brewers stopped trusting him early on and had no interest in bringing him back at even a fraction of the $3.2 million he made last season. In fact, of the five teams Mota has been with since the Dodgers traded him in 2004, none were at all fond of him by the end of his tenure.
