Ryan Franklin blew his fifth save of the season after allowing the tying run to the Cubs in the ninth inning Saturday.
The Cardinals rallied back in the bottom of the inning to score a walk-off win, but Franklin looked awful and has become unreliable at the worst of times. He's blown all three of his last save chances.

Ryan Franklin blew his fourth save of the season Saturday after allowing two earned runs in the top of the ninth inning to the Braves.
Franklin has picked a bad time to lose his cool. He has allowed six earned runs and 13 total baserunners over his last 3 1/3 innings of work and shouldn't be trusted in the ninth inning until he rights the ship. If he proves unreliable down the stretch, the once-steady Cards will be in a serious predicament.

Ryan Franklin will get a few days off, and possibly the entire series against Milwaukee, according to MLB.com.
According to MLB.com, Franklin "acknowledged that his command hasn't been as sharp lately as he'd like, but he's not overly concerned just yet." He has allowed four runs in three September appearances. The aforementioned command hasn't helped. Since August 12, he has a 5/9 K/BB rate in 10 innings over 11 appearances.

According to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals have reached a contract extension with RHP Ryan Franklin that will keep him with the team through the 2011 season.
"It is no secret that when we entered spring training, the question of who would be our closer was unsettled," said team vice president and general manager John Mozeliak. " 'Franky' has responded to that challenge in a big way, and our club would not be where we are today without his outstanding performance and leadership." He certainly has, as the 36-year-old veteran currently leads the league with 35 saves and the majors with a 1.05 ERA. Financial terms are not yet available.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals are nearing a two-year extension with closer Ryan Franklin.
Franklin's 2010 $2.75 million club option will be picked up as part of the agreement, and he'll be paid $3.75 million in 2011. The deal also includes plenty of performance-based incentives. Franklin, 36, is enjoying a breakout season with a 1.07 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 34 saves in 36 chances. A regression back to the mean is to be expected, but the Cardinals are not being forced to shell out closer-type cash. It's a superb bargain.

Ryan Franklin will not be used in any capacity for Thursday's game, manager Tony La Russa said.
Franklin has three saves in three days, for 34 saves total. Franklin is another one of Dave Duncan's miracles as he has a sterling 1.07 ERA and 0.91 WHIP as the Cardinals closer.
