The Orioles officially announced Thursday that they have declined Melvin Mora's 2010 option worth $8 million.
The move was expected. Mora, who turns 38 in February, hit .260/.321/.358 this season with just 28 extra-base hits in 484 plate appearances. He's now headed for free agency and will look to sign on elsewhere as a utility infielder. The O's apparently have no interest in bringing him back at a lesser price and could try Ty Wigginton at third base until prospect Josh Bell proves he's ready.

 Melvin Mora-3B - Orioles Sep. 25 - 8:48 am et

According to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles will not pick up Melvin Mora's $8 million option for 2010.
It will end his nine-year tenure with the Birds, and rightly so. The 37-year-old's stats have declined sharply and he's become a major injury risk. "Whatever I am going to be next year," Mora said Thursday, "I'll never get tired of thanking the Orioles, because I made my career here." A career .278/.352/.436 hitter, he's batting just .259/.317/.361 in '09.

 Melvin Mora-3B - Orioles Sep. 13 - 12:59 pm et

Melvin Mora was a late scratch from Baltimore's lineup Sunday with a sore right elbow.
Drat. Mora is tied for second place in career starts at third base for Baltimore. He's locked in a heated battle with Doug DeCinces at 793. Brooks Robinson is, of course, first. Mora has over 2,000 more starts to go before he catches Robinson, and we all know that won't happen. Justin Turner draws the start in Mora's place. Only 792 to go.

Melvin Mora went 3-for-4 with a homer off Kevin Millwood and three RBI in the Orioles' 5-4 win over the Rangers on Saturday.
Nolan Reimold also took Millwood deep. Mora has three homers in eight games after collecting a total of four in his first 97 contests. It's a must that he turn in a strong September if he expects any teams to look at him as a regular third baseman when he becomes a free agent this winter.

Melvin Mora went 3-for-4 and homered in a loss to the Indians on Thursday night.
The home run was just Mora's second since the All-Star break and he's slugging just .341 on the season. His power has almost completely evaporated.
 Melvin Mora-3B - Orioles Aug. 4 - 4:47 pm et

Melvin Mora is back in the starting lineup on Tuesday.
He'll bat sixth against Jarrod Washburn. Mora was benched in four of the last five games and wasn't too happy about it. He'll need much better production in order to get regular playing time again, but don't be surprised to see this situation resolved in the next week or so.
