 Angel Pagan-OF- MetsJan. 22 - 2:49 pm et
Mets GM Omar Minaya said Friday that the center field job will be an "open competition" between Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews Jr..
And so it begins. Pagan, 28, hit .306/.350/.487 with six homers, 32 RBI and 14 stolen bases over 343 at-bats last season and played solid defense in the outfield, but he's going to lose playing time to Minaya's new toy. Matthews, who's now 35, batted just .250/.336/.361 in 2009 with four homers in 316 at-bats. He has a bad left knee and is no longer a talented defensive outfielder. Let's all just pray that Carlos Beltran returns quickly.

 Gary Matthews Jr.-OF - Mets Jan. 22 - 1:11 pm et

Mets acquired OF Gary Matthews Jr. from the Angels for RHP Brian Stokes.
The Angels will eat $21.5 million of the two years, $23.5 million remaining on Matthews' contract, which helps make this deal seem a little less ridiculous. Matthews, 35, has hit just .248/.325/.383 since signing a five-year, $50 million contract with the Angels in November of 2006 and had a .697 OPS in 316 at-bats last season. The Mets obviously added him as insurance for Carlos Beltran (knee), but let's hope he doesn't cut into Angel Pagan's playing time.
 Gary Matthews Jr.-OF - Mets Jan. 22 - 12:23 pm et

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Angels will eat $21.5 million of the $23.5 million remaining on Gary Matthews Jr.'s contract.
The Angels agreed to ship Matthews to the Mets on Friday morning in exchange for reliever Brian Stokes. As long as the Mets don't let their new outfielder cut in on Angel Pagan's playing time, it seems like a fine transaction. Matthews, 35, hit .250/.336/.361 last season while Stokes, 30, posted a 1.56 WHIP and a 45/38 K/BB ratio over 70 1/3 innings.

 Brian Stokes-R - Angels Jan. 22 - 11:56 am et

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com has confirmed that reliever Brian Stokes is headed to the Angels in return for outfielder Gary Matthews Jr..
Stokes somehow managed a 3.97 ERA last season despite the ugly 1.56 WHIP and 45/38 K/BB ratio he compiled over 70-plus innings. He's never really been an effective reliever, but the Angels' main goal with this deal was to dump Matthews. We're still waiting to learn about the money involved.

 Gary Matthews Jr.-OF - Mets Jan. 22 - 11:31 am et

ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick has learned that the Mets will send a "low salaried pitcher" to the Angels in exchange for outfielder Gary Matthews Jr..
SI.com's Jon Heyman suggested Brian Stokes might be the man in a column filed early Friday morning. We'll just have to wait and see. Stokes, for what it's worth, is a 30-year-old right-hander with a 5.02 career ERA and 1.62 career WHIP. He posted a 45/38 K/BB ratio last season in 70 1/3 innings.

 Gary Matthews Jr.-OF - Mets Jan. 22 - 11:16 am et

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com hears that the Angels will pick up a "whole bunch" of Gary Matthews Jr.'s remaining salary in their deal with the Mets.
As they should. Matthews was reportedly dealt to New York on Friday morning, though we haven't caught wind of any other details. The 35-year-old outfielder is owed $23 million over the next two seasons and hit just .250/.336/.361 in 360 plate appearances last year. He's expected to see some time in the Mets' outfield while Carlos Beltran (knee) is sidelined.
