Gil Meche (shoulder inflammation) is unlikely to pitch the remainder of the year.
Meche has battled arm and back troubles all year, leaving him with a pedestrian 5.09 ERA on the year after sub-4 ERAs the past two years. The 30-year old will play catch shortly and the Royals will take things on a day-by-day basis for the rest of the season. Manager Trey Hillman calls the right-hander "doubtful" to return. Robinson Tejada will continue to start in his place.

 Gil Meche-S - Royals Sep. 4 - 5:03 pm et

Gil Meche has been scratched from his start Friday due to right arm fatigue.
Robinson Tejeda will be his late fill-in. Meche got shelled to the tune of seven runs in four innings his last time out, so he probably still isn't right after being activated from the DL three weeks ago. He's reportedly been slow to heal from the back problems that originally sidelined him. If Meche has to go on the DL again, Tejeda could fill the rotation vacancy.

Gil Meche won in his return from the DL after allowing four runs in five innings against the Twins on Thursday.
Joe Mauer knocked in all four of those runs with a double and a homer. Incredibly, the Kansas City bullpen held on to a one-run lead for four innings to get Meche the decision in a 5-4 game. Give much of the credit to Nick Punto, who struck out bunting with two on and none out in the bottom of the sixth. After another walk to load the bases, Orlando Cabrera grounded into an inning-ending double play. Meche is 5-9 with a 4.62 ERA.
 Gil Meche-S - Royals Aug. 13 - 12:35 pm et

Royals activated RHP Gil Meche from the 15-day disabled list.
Meche will get the nod Thursday against the Twins. He looked great during a pair of rehab starts at Triple-A Omaha last week and will try to get back on track in the bigs. He was 0-4 in his last five starts before hitting the disabled list, allowing 23 earned runs in 23 2/3 innings.
 Bruce Chen-S - Royals Aug. 11 - 7:36 pm et

The Royals have placed Bruce Chen back in the bullpen.
Chen, 32, gained his first victory since October of 2005 last Thursday against the Mariners, allowing just two runs over 6 2/3 innings. But Gil Meche is ready to return and will reclaim his rotation spot.

 Gil Meche-S - Royals Aug. 10 - 10:22 am et

Gil Meche (back) is tentatively scheduled to return from the disabled list and start against the Twins on Thursday.
Meche surrendered just one run over five innings Saturday in his second rehab start with Triple-A Omaha. He held the opposition to three hits and struck out two while throwing 53 of his 85 pitches strikes. While those numbers are pretty, the right-hander was 0-4 in his last five starts before hitting the disabled list, so fantasy owners may want to give him a few warm-up outings.
