Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos said negotiations with free agent Marco Scutaro have "stalled more than anything."
It's looking more and more likely that Scutaro is a goner. Anthopoulos said that if the Jays did keep Scutaro, it would be on a one-year deal -- probably after the arbitration offer that will officially make Scutaro a Type A free agent if he declined it. Toronto signed veteran John McDonald to a two-year contract on Wednesday, but Anthopoulos said McDonald's role is "undefined" as of now and that he is still searching for a long-term solution at shortstop. Free agents Miguel Tejada and Orlando Cabrera are two options and you can bet Anthopoulos will be scouring the systems of clubs interested in Roy Halladay for shortstop prospects.

 John McDonald-SS - Blue Jays Nov. 25 - 6:48 pm et

Blue Jays re-signed infielder John McDonald to a two-year, $3 million contract.
McDonald currently sits atop the organization's depth chart at shortstop. Marco Scutaro is a free agent, and the Jays might let him leave for the Type A draft compensation he will net Toronto by signing with another team. Without a clear shortstop of the future in the Blue Jays' pipeline, McDonald could be a short-term fix in that scenario. McDonald, 35, hit .258/.271/.384 in 2009 with four home runs and 13 RBI over 151 at-bats. Of course, the Jays really want him back for his defense, which is considered elite. If the club finds another starting shortstop, McDonald will return to a utility role.

A source told MLB.com's Jordan Bastian that the Blue Jays will announce the re-signing of John McDonald on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse, the Blue Jays are set to re-sign infielder John McDonald for $1.5 million.
McDonald has spent the last five seasons with the Blue Jays, who clearly values his glove. The 34-year-old could be in line for a lot of at-bats backing up third baseman Edwin Encarnacion and could end up starting at short if the club can't import a better option.

General manager Alex Anthopoulos said that while he is open to bringing back Marco Scutaro, Rod Barajas and John McDonald, that doesn't mean it will happen.
"As much as I like John McDonald, Rod Barajas and Marco Scutaro, there might be alternatives that make this organization better and are the right alternatives for this team," said Anthopoulos. "We'd like to bring them back, (but) everything has to fit with respect to what the alternatives are and with respect to what their financial requirements are. I'm starting to get a pretty good handle on where their expectations are with respect to the market and what they feel their value might be." Among the impending free agents, Scutaro, 34, figures to drum up the most interest on the open market. As a Type A free agent, he could net the Blue Jays two first round draft picks if he turns down arbitration in order to sign with another team.

 John McDonald-SS - Blue Jays Oct. 15 - 10:06 am et

According to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun, the Orioles are interested in free agent infielder John McDonald.
McDonald, 35, hit .258/.271/.384 with four home runs and 13 RBI in 151 at-bats and played a solid defense this season for the Blue Jays. With Melvin Mora on his way out, the O's could use some inexpensive infield depth.
